Keshubhai Patel become Chief Minister after Election for first time. Congress won 45 seat, better than last election (33 seats in 1990 election).

Keshubhai Patel was an Indian politician who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 1995 and again from 1998 to 2001. He was a six-time member of Gujarat Legislative Assembly. He was a member of RSS since 1940s, of Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1960s, Janata Party in 1970s, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 1980. He left the BJP in 2012 and formed the Gujarat Parivartan Party. Bhupendra Rajnikant Patel is an Indian politician, Civil Engineer and Builder who is serving as the 17th and current Chief Minister of Gujarat since 2021. He represents the Ghatlodia Assembly constituency in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly since 2017. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He started his political career in municipal bodies of Ahmedabad.

The 8th Gujarat Legislative Assembly election was held in 1990. No party won the majority. Janata Dal (JD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 70 and 67 seats respectively. Indian National Congress won only 33 seats, compared to 149 seats in previous legislative election. The alliance of BJP and JD formed the government under the chief ministership of Chimanbhai Patel of JD and deputy chief ministership of Keshubhai Patel of BJP.

The 7th Gujarat Legislative Assembly election was held in 1985. The incumbent Indian National Congress (INC) obtained majority with an increase in the vote share and number of seats which was a record in terms of number of seats. INC won 149 seats out of total 182 seats. Janata Party (JP) won only 14 seats, showcasing dominance of INC at that time. This was the best ever electoral performance of INC in Gujarat and their record of 149 seats was surpassed only by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022 elections. 1985 election remains the most recent election in Gujarat in which Indian National Congress won a majority in Gujarat Assembly as its support and vote bank was heavily declined by the rise of BJP

The 6th Gujarat Legislative Assembly election was held in 1977. Indian National Congress (INC) won 141 seats out of 182 seats. While, Janata Party (JP) won 21 seats and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won nine seats. INC performed better in this election and gained 66 seats.

The 3rd Gujarat Legislative Assembly election was held in 1967. It was the second election held after formation of Gujarat. Indian National Congress (INC) won 93 seats out of 168 seats. While, Swatantra Party (SWA) won 66 seats. INC performed badly in this election and lost 20 seats, and SWA improve performance and won 40 more seats. Total 599 men and 14 women contested in the election. Total 160 men and 8 women won in the elections. Number of polling stations were 11,554 and number of electors per polling stations were 926.

The 1st Gujarat Legislative Assembly election was held in 1962. It was the first election after forming of two states, Gujarat and Maharashtra following split of Bombay State. Indian National Congress won 113 seats out of 154 seats. While, Swatantra Party won 26 seats and Praja Socialist Party won seven seats.

Gujarat Legislative Assembly or Gujarat Vidhan Sabha is the unicameral legislature of the Indian state of Gujarat, in the state capital Gandhinagar. Presently, 182 members of the Legislative Assembly are directly elected from single-member constituencies (seats). It has a term of 5 years unless it is dissolved sooner. 13 constituencies are reserved for scheduled castes and 27 constituencies for scheduled tribes. From its majority party group or by way of a grand coalition cabinet of its prominent members, the state's Executive namely the Government of Gujarat is formed.
