Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus Williams in the final, 7–6(7–4), 3–6, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2003 Australian Open. It was her fourth consecutive major singles triumph, completing the "Serena Slam", both a non-calendar year Grand Slam and the career Grand Slam. It was also Venus' record fourth consecutive runner-up finish at a major, losing every final to Serena. Serena saved two match points en route to the title, against Kim Clijsters in the semifinals.
Lourdes Domínguez Lino and Arantxa Parra Santonja were the defending champions, but were forced to withdraw due to a right foot injury for Domínguez Lino, before their quarterfinals match against Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez
Serena and Venus Williams were the defending champions, but lost in the third round to Elena Dementieva and Lina Krasnoroutskaya.
Daniela Hantuchová defeated Martina Hingis in the final, 6–3, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2002 Indian Wells Masters. It was her first WTA Tour singles title.

The 2001 Thalgo Australian Women's Hardcourts doubles was a tennis competition within the 2001 Thalgo Australian Women's Hardcourts, a tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts at the Hope Island Resort Tennis Centre in Hope Island, Queensland in Australia and was part of Tier III of the 2001 WTA Tour. The tournament ran from 31 December 2000 through 6 January 2001.

Defending champions Elena Dementieva and Janette Husárová did not compete together. Dementieva and Lina Krasnoroutskaya were third seed, but lost in the first round. Husárová and Patty Schnyder were unseeded; they lost in the second round to fourth seed Nadia Petrova and Meghann Shaughnessy. Petrova and Shaughnessy went on to reach the final, were they defeated the Russian wildcard team Anastasia Myskina and Vera Zvonareva.
Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suárez were the defending champions and won in the final 6–2, 6–3, against Svetlana Kuznetsova and Martina Navratilova in straight sets. This was Ruano Pascual's 4th career Grand Slam doubles title and her 2nd title at the US Open. It was also Suárez' 4th career Grand Slam doubles title and her 2nd title at the US Open.

Patty Schnyder defeated the defending champion Lindsay Davenport in the final, 6–7(5–7), 7–6(10–8), 6–3 to win the singles tennis title at the 2002 Swisscom Challenge. It was her first title of the season, and the eighth title of her career.
María José Martínez Sánchez and Anabel Medina Garrigues were the defending champions, but none competed this year. Martínez Sánchez decided to compete in Scottsdale at the same week.
