Senate elections were held in Kazakhstan on 4 October 2008. [1] All 16 seats representing the regions of Kazakhstan were elected by the local legislative bodies (maslihats). 3310 of the 3231 eligible electorates voted in the election. [2]

Electoral system

The members of the Senate of Kazakhstan are nonpartisan and are indirectly elected by the local legislative bodies Maslihats every six years. Each region and cities of Almaty and Astana are represented by two senators while 15 senators are appointed by the President of Kazakhstan. [3]

Prior to her appointment as UN ambassador, she was the Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan from 2004 to 2005 and then the Minister of Education and Science until Zhanseit Tuymenbayev replaced her on 10 January 2007. She served as Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Italy from 2002 to 2004, and ambassador to Israel from 1996 to 2002.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2012 Kazakh legislative election</span>

Legislative elections were held in Kazakhstan on 15 January 2012. The result was a victory for the Nur Otan party, which won 83 of the 98 seats in the Mäjilis. However, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) stated that the election "did not meet fundamental principles of democratic elections." The elections marked the first time that the second-placed party would gain parliamentary seats irrespective of whether it cleared the 7% electoral threshold. Due to the Zhanaozen massacre and the resulting state of emergency there, the election was not planned to be held in Zhanaozen. However, this decision was overturned on 10 January 2012.

Muhammet Jumanazaruly Kopeev is a Kazakhstani politician who served as a member of the Senate of Kazakhstan from 29 November 2005 to 24 November 2011 and was its Deputy Chair. Prior to that, he was Minister of Emergency Situations from 30 September 2004 to 11 August 2005 and was a member of the Mazhilis from 1996 to 2004 where he was Mazhilis Deputy Chair from 1 December 1999 until 2004.

Ömirbek Bäigeldi is a retired Kazakh politician who was a member of the Senate of Kazakhstan where he served as the Chair from 30 January 1996 to 29 November 1999 and then its Deputy Chair from 1 December 1999 to 1 December 2005. Prior to that, Baigeldi was the Head of the Jambyl Region from 1992 to 1995.

Senate elections were held in Kazakhstan on 12 August 2020. All 17 of the 49 seats were up for reelection including the newly created represented seat from the city of Shymkent. 2889 out of total 3069 members of the Mäslihats cast their vote for a Senator representing each region and three municipal cities.

The Astana City Mäslihat is a unicameral legislature of Kazakhstan’s capital city of Astana. The councillors of the City Mäslihat are elected concurrently with the MP's of the Mäjilis. The City Mäslihat councillors perform their duties by approving plans, economic and social programs for the city's development.

The Shymkent City Mäslihat is a unicameral legislature of the city of Shymkent. The councillors of the City Mäslihat are elected concurrently with the MPs of the Mazhilis.

The 23rd Extraordinary Assembly of People of Kazakhstan Session was held on 21 March 2016 at the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation in Astana following the 2016 legislative elections. From there, 372 of 446 Assembly of People of Kazakhstan (QHA) members took part in voting for its nine nominees to the Mazhilis of which the seats were reserved to. As a result, nine new members were elected whom were: Sauytbek Adrahmanov, Vladimir Bozhko, Natalya Zhumadildaeva, Roman Kim, Narine Mikaelyan, Akhmed Muradov, Shaimardan Nurumov, Yuriy Tymoshenko, and Shakir Khakhazov.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1994 Kazakh local elections</span>

Local elections were held in Kazakhstan on 7 March 1994 for the first time to elect 5,935 members of the mäslihats (local assemblies). The mäslihat elections coincided with the legislative elections and the voter turnout was reported to be 73.52%.
