On May 18, 2010, a bombing took place in Kachi Paind Khan area of Dera Ismail Khan. The bomb was planted on a motorcycle and killed 13 people while injured 14 on its detonation. [1] Deputy superintendent of Kulachi police, Muhammad Iqbal Khan was also among the deceased and was said to be the target of attack. [2]

Background

Dera Ismail Khan had hosted many incidents of bombing prior to this one. Policemen and security officials are targeted by militants in Pakistan as retaliation to ongoing War in North-West Pakistan. The 2010 Dera Ismail Khan bombing was also carried out against police.

Attack

On 18 May, when DSP of Kulachi, Iqbal Khan left his home at Kachi Paind Khan escorted by police mobile, a bomb planted in Motorcycle exploded near the police van. [3] Security official reached the site and cordoned off the area. According to bomb disposal squad, four kilograms of material was used in the bomb. [3] 13 people were killed while 14 got injured. The injured were brought to District Head Quarter hospital where five were said to be in critical condition. [4] The human flesh of the victims was laid scattered on roads and bang of explosion was heard in three kilometer radius. [5]

According to hospital sources, besides DSP Mohammad Iqbal Khan, his gunman Irshad, driver Mohammad Mushtaq, Bashir Ahmad, Mohammad Irshad, Insaf Bibi, Irum Bibi, Mohammad Younis, Arsalan, Sabir, Abdul Sattar, Shahzeb and an unknown man were among the deceased. [6]

The injured were identified as Bakhtullah, Mohammad Sharif, Asif Iqbal, Mulazim Hussain, Shah Jehan, Bashir Ahmad, Jamshed, Ghulam Hussain, Mohammad Ramzan, Rehmatullah, and an unidentified child while the son of Iqbal khan was also injured in the attack. [7]

Reactions

President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, Prime minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of National Assembly, Fehmida Mirza and Faisal Karim Kundi, Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Khan, Emir Jamaat-e-Islami, Munawar Hassan and president of Pakistan Muslim League (N), Nawaz Sharif have condemned attack and offered condolence to families of victims. [8] Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ameer Haider Khan Hoti condemned the attack calling it "cowardly act of terrorism" and said that this type of incidents cannot deter government commitment of war against terrorism. Dera Ismail Khan, abbreviated as D.I. Khan, is a city and capital of Dera Ismail Khan District, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad is a codename of a combined military operation by the Pakistani military in support of local law enforcement agencies to disarm and eliminate the terrorist sleeper cells across all states of Pakistan, started on 22 February 2017. The operation is aimed to eliminate the threat of terrorism, and consolidating the gains of Operation Zarb-e-Azb which was launched in 2014 as a joint military offensive. It is further aimed at ensuring the security of Pakistan's borders. The operation is ongoing active participation from Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Police and other Warfare and Civil Armed Forces managed under the Government of Pakistan. More than 375,000 operations have been carried out against terrorists so far. This operation has been mostly acknowledged after Operation Zarb e Azb.

On 29 July 2013, terrorists attacked on Dera Ismail Khan's central prison and freed more than 240 criminals including 35 high-profile terrorists. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility of attack.

On 24 November 2012, the day of Ashura, an explosion took place in Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan on the crowd of Shiite who were mourning according to their ideology. Ashura is the holiest of days for followers of Shia Islam and marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Hussain, grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, who was martyred at the battle of Karbala in 680. 8 people were killed while more than 80 people were injured.

January 2009 Dera Ismail Khan bombings involved two incidents in Dera Ismail Khan. The first occurred on 4 January in front of Polytechnic College, killing ten people, including four policemen and two journalists, and injuring 28. The other occurred when a bomb planted on motorcycle exploded on 26 January near town hall, killing 6 people and injuring 24.

On May 14, 2009, three Hand Grenades were thrown on Police officers in Dera Ismail Khan. A motorcycle rider threw a hand grenade on police emergency office. According to local Police Chief of city, Muhammad Iqbal, 5 police officers were wounded in first grenade's explosion three of whom were seriously hurt. In the next half an hour, two more grenades were lobbed on two police posts near a bus stand. Four police officers were injured in next two explosions. In all the three explosions, 9 police officers were injured. All injures were brought to a state–run hospital. Ashiq Saleem, doctor at hospital, said, "we have received eight injures, three of them are serious, all of them are police officers." No group have yet claimed responsibility for attacks.

On 25 June 2011, 12 militants of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacked a police station in Kulachi, Dera Ismail Khan. In response police defended building and a conflict started between police and terrorists which lasted for five hours. 10 policemen were killed while three were injured. Five terrorists were killed and others managed to escape. The spokesman of TTP Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility and said that the attack was carried in retaliation against Osama's killing and government's attacks against terrorists.

In July 2007, a series of suicide bombings took place across Pakistan in the aftermath of the Lal Masjid siege which resulted in an end to the 10-month truce held by the Waziristan Accord. At least 154 people were killed and more than 230 others were injured in the suicide attacks.

Sardar Ikramullah Gandapur was a Pakistani politician, and a member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf who served as provisional Minister for Agriculture in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. He was elected to his late brother, Israr Ullah Khan Gandapur, ex law minister's seat through a by-election.

On 22 July 2018, 3 days before general elections, a suicide bomber blew himself near the vehicle of former KPK provincial minister of Agriculture Ikramullah Khan Gandapur in Kulachi, Dera Ismail Khan District, Pakistan. The prime target of attack, Gandapur was brought to Dera Ismail Khan in critical condition where he succumbed to his wounds. Apart from Gandapur, his driver and one of his guards was also killed and three more people were injured. Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the assault describing Gandapur's killing of their colleague militants as the motive. The attack was widely condemned across Pakistan.
