He served as the Seventh Vice-President of Kenya in 2002 and Deputy Prime Minister when he resigned to contest for the Presidency in 2013 and emerged third. He was the Deputy Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) (2005-2012) and Party Leader of the United Democratic Front (UDF). Currently, he is the Prime Cabinet Secretary-designate under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance (KKA) led by President-Elect William Ruto that won the 2022 Kenya General Election, and the party leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC) and one of the founding members of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance (KKA).

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is a centre-left political party in Kenya. It is the successor of a grassroots people's movement which was formed during the 2005 Kenyan constitutional referendum campaign. This movement separated in August 2007 into the Orange Democratic Movement Party of Kenya and the Wiper Democratic Movement – Kenya.

The Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K) is a political party in Kenya, which originated as a result of the 2005 Kenyan constitutional referendum. It is headed by Kalonzo Musyoka, who ran for president in 2007 and served as the vice-president in the Grand Coalition of Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga. It is now a member of the main opposition NASA.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Party of National Unity (Kenya)</span> Political party in Kenya

The Party of National Unity (PNU) is a political party in Kenya originally founded as a political coalition. On 16 September 2007, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki announced the party formation and said that he would run as its presidential candidate in the December 2007 Kenyan elections. It has since become a political party in its own right following conditions set by the Political Parties Act, passed in Kenya in 2008. Recently PNU has launched activities to revamp itself ahead of the 2022 general elections.

General elections were held in Kenya on 27 December 2007. Voters elected the President, and members of the National Assembly. They coincided with the 2007 Kenyan local elections.

The 10th Parliament of Kenya saw the National Assembly opened on 15 January 2008. This following the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) of Raila Odinga winning a majority in the 2007 parliamentary elections. Raila was a candidate in the presidential elections, which resulted in a controversial victory for Mwai Kibaki of the Party of National Unity. The opening of the parliament was fraught with jeers, cheers and brawls between the opposing parties; Mwai Kibaki was greeted by the ODM members with silence and boos, while Raila was greeted by PNU members with accusations of genocide.

Erupting in June 2008, the Grand Regency Scandal concerns the sale of the Grand Regency Hotel in Downtown Nairobi, Kenya, from the Central Bank of Kenya to an unspecified group of Libyan investors called "Libya Arab African Investment Company". The sale was directed by Finance Minister Amos Kimunya, leading to passage of near-unanimous censure of Kimunya by the Kenyan Parliament on 1 July 2008. On 8 July 2008 Kimunya submitted his resignation, and called for an investigation to clear his name.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2010 Kenyan constitutional referendum</span>

A constitutional referendum was held in Kenya on 4 August 2010. Voters were asked whether they approved of a proposed new constitution, which had been passed by the National Assembly on 1 April 2010. The new constitution was seen as a vital step to avoid a repetition of the violent outbursts after the 2007 general elections.

John Ngata Kariuki is a Kenyan politician and businessman. He has two children: James Kariuki (husband to Alison Ngethe Kariuki and Dr. Elizabeth Nyawira. His grandchildren are Robyn Kariuki, Lauryn and Colin. His wife, Rose Wanjiku Kariuki, died in 2015.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2013 Kenyan general election</span> 2013 General Elections in Kenya

General elections were held in Kenya on 4 March 2013. Voters elected the President, members of the National Assembly and newly formed Senate. They were the first elections held under the new constitution, which was approved in a 2010 referendum, and were also the first run by the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). They coincided with the 2013 Kenyan local elections.
