Kamukunji Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya, one of the seventeen constituencies of Nairobi County, encompasing central to eastern areas of Nairobi. Kamukunji constituency had common boundaries with Pumwani Division. The entire constituency is located within Nairobi City County area. The constituency has an area of 8.80 km2 (3.4 sq mi). The constituency was originally what was known as Nairobi Central Constituency at the 1963 elections. The current constituency boundaries were revised prior to the 2013 elections. It borders Starehe Constituency to the west, Makadara to the south, Embakasi West Constituency to the east, and Mathare Constituency to the north.

Contents

Prominent politician Tom Mboya was the first Member of Parliament (MP) from this constituency. He was assassinated in 1969.

Wards

After the promulgation of the 2010 constitution and the implementation of devolution, the 2013 elections led to a revision of Kamukunji Constituency's boundaries. This revision reduced the number of wards to five and created new ones, namely; California, Eastleigh North, Eastleigh South, Airbase and Pumwani wards.

Kamukunji Sub-county

The Sub-county shares nearly the same boundaries with what was the Pumwani Division; the division had common boundaries with Kamukunji Constituency prior to 2013. The sub-county is headquartered in Pumwani, headed by a Deputy County Commissioner, working under the Ministry of Interior. [9]

It was known as Nairobi South Constituency at the 1963 elections but since the 1969 elections it has been known as Lang'ata Constituency.

Makadara Constituency is an electoral constituency in Nairobi City County, Kenya. It is one of the seventeen constituencies in the county. It was renamed prior to the 1997 elections, but was also known as Nairobi Doonholm Constituency for the 1963 elections, then as Bahati Constituency from 1966 to 1997. It consists of some central and southern of central areas of Nairobi County. The entire constituency is located within Nairobi City County, and has an area of 13 km2. The constituency was established for the 1966 elections, with an area of 20 km2 (7.7 sq mi). The 10th Parliament of Kenya saw the National Assembly opened on 15 January 2008. This following the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) of Raila Odinga winning a majority in the 2007 parliamentary elections. Raila was a candidate in the presidential elections, which resulted in a controversial victory for Mwai Kibaki of the Party of National Unity. The opening of the parliament was fraught with jeers, cheers and brawls between the opposing parties; Mwai Kibaki was greeted by the ODM members with silence and boos, while Raila was greeted by PNU members with accusations of genocide.

Bahati is an estate in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

Pumwani is an estate of Nairobi. It is one of the oldest estates in Nairobi's eastlands. In 2019 it had an estimated population of 42,461, a population density of 34,767/km2. Pumwani contains other neighbourhoods such as Magorofani, Shauri Moyo, Majengo, Bondeni and Maziwa.

Majengo is a slum in the Pumwani area of Nairobi. In 2019, it had a population of 17,645, and a population density of 51,692/km2. It is approximately 3km from Nairobi central business district, and next to Gikomba Market. Majengo forms part of Pumwani ward; which is in the larger Kamukunji sub-county of Nairobi City County. Majengo also hosts the headquarters for Kamukunji Constituency.

Nairobi City County is one of the 47 counties of Kenya. With an estimated population of 5,454,000 in 2024, it is the third-smallest in area of the counties, yet the most populous one. It also serves as the capital of Kenya. Kibra Constituency is an electoral constituency in Nairobi, one of 17 constituencies in the county, and has an area of 12.1 km2. It is located to the southwest of the City of Nairobi, and includes most of the Kibera slum and adjoining estates. The constituency was created prior to the 2013 general election.

Embakasi West is a constituency in Nairobi. It is one of seventeen constituencies in Nairobi County. The constituency was formed prior to the 2013 elections, and has an area of 9.35 km2 (3.6 sq mi). Most of the area that forms Embakasi West Constituency was part of Embakasi Constituency; though some of its areas were part of Kamukunji Constituency. Embakasi West includes four electoral wards: Umoja I, Umoja II, Mowlem, and Kariobangi South.

Mathare is a constituency in Nairobi. It is one of seventeen constituencies in Nairobi City County. It was created prior to the 2013 general election, when Starehe Constituency boundaries were revised. It is the smallest constituency in Nairobi with an area of 3.00 km2 (1.2 sq mi). It borders Ruaraka Constituency to the north; Roysambu and Westlands constituencies to the northwest; Embakasi Central Constituency to the east; Kamukunji Constituency to the south; and Starehe Constituency to the west.

Starehe is a neighbourhood in the city of Nairobi. It is approximately 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi) east of the central business district of Nairobi. It is one of the oldest estates in Nairobi.
