Nyakach Constituency

Nyakach is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies of Kisumu County. The constituency has five wards, all electing MCAs for the Kisumu County Assembly and has a population of 150,320 people based on the 2019 census report. [1]

Contents

The constituency was established for the 1966 elections, when it was split from the Nyando Constituency. [2] It was one of three constituencies of the former Nyando District.

Ahero is a town in the city of Kisumu, the third largest city in Kenya and the second largest city, after Kampala, in the Lake Victoria Basin. It is an agriculture town in Kenya that is part of Kisumu County. The town has a retail market serving as a main trading center for food and goods coming from Kisii, Homabay, and Nandi. It hosts a town council and has an urban population of 7,891 and a total population of 61,556.

Awasi is a small town in Kisumu County, Kenya. It is a small center that has grown to become the headquarters of Nyando Sub-county in Kisumu County. The town is also commonly known by the name "Ladhri", a Dholuo word meaning 'someone who always lacks' or 'someone begging for help/ looking to others for help'.

Nyamware is a settlement in Kenya's Nyanza Province. It is located in Kadibo division, Nyando constituency, Kisumu county. Settlement in this place dates back to 1867. It serves as a beach along one of the tributaries of river Nyando. Fishing is the main economic activity in this area and buyers come as far as Kisumu town to buy fish from traders. Some of the common fishes found in this place are omena (dagaa), mbuta, tilapia (ng'ege), kamongo (mudfish), mumi (catfish) among other species. Beach management commonly referred to as BM by the locals offers administrative roles alongside area assistant chief and chief. The current chief is Mark Dero Nyadianga, an energetic and straightforward person. In the past, this place was inaccessible during rainy season, however, with the devolution, this place has a murram road from Alendu Shopping centre. With this road, Nyamware is accessible.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sub-Counties of Kenya</span>

Sub-counties, also known as Districts, are the decentralised units through which government of Kenya provides functions and services. At national level, sub-counties take a more administrative function like security, statistical purposes, provision of government services, etc. Even though the sub-counties are divisions of counties, powers to create new national sub-counties lies with the national government. As of 2023, there are 314 sub-counties, compared to 290 constituencies. A deputy county commissioner is appointed by the state to lead each sub-county. The sub-counties are further divided into divisions, locations and sub-locations.

Kobura Ward is a ward in Nyando Constituency, Kisumu County, Kenya. It comprises Masogo, Kotieno, Kamayoga, Lela, Nyamware North, Nyamware South, and Okana Sub-locations of Kisumu County. It has a population of around 36,261 people and covers 77.9 km2. It is land locked save for a short stream opening into Lake Victoria. Kobura land lies on a plain overlooked by the Nyakach, Kajulu and Nandi hills. These hills endow Kobura with several streams cutting across its area as well as helping form its borders. The ward is located only 5km from the Kisumu City. The ward is home to famous figures in Kenya and Kisumu. Billy Oliver Odhiambo, an independent candidate, represents the ward in the Kisumu County Assembly.
