The 2012 Brisbane City Council election was held on 28 April 2012 to elect a lord mayor and 26 councillors to the City of Brisbane. The election was held as part of the statewide local government elections in Queensland, Australia. [1]
The election resulted in a landslide re-election of the Liberal National Party (previously represented in Queensland as the Liberal Party), increasing their representation by two wards. The incumbent Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk, was elected to his first full-term with a substantial 68.3% of the two-party-preferred vote.
Campbell Newman was elected Lord Mayor of Brisbane in 2008 as the Liberal Party candidate. In 2011 he resigned as Lord Mayor to be the Liberal National Party's candidate for Premier of Queensland. Graham Quirk was elected as Lord Mayor by the Councillors on 7 April 2011. [2]

The Liberal National's gained the wards of Doboy and Karawatha from the Labor Party and lost the ward of Tennyson to an Independent, for a net gain of two wards and a majority of 18 wards, to their nearest competitor, Labor's at 7 wards.

1 Graham Quirk was appointed Lord Mayor after the resignation of Campbell Newman in 2011. Steven Huang was appointed Councillor for MacGregor Ward in his place.
2 Nicole Johnston was elected as a member of the LNP in 2008 but resigned from the party to sit as an Independent.
3 Jane Prentice resigned from Council in 2010 to contest the Federal electorate of Ryan for the LNP. Julian Simmonds of the LNP was elected Councillor at a by-election in October that year.
Campbell Kevin Thomas Newman is an Australian former politician who served as the 38th Premier of Queensland from 26 March 2012 to 14 February 2015. He served as the member for Ashgrove in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland between 24 March 2012 and 31 January 2015. He was LNP Leader from 2 April 2011 to 7 February 2015; Newman previously served as the 15th Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 27 March 2004 to 3 April 2011.
Lawrence James Springborg is an Australian politician. He led the National Party in the Queensland Parliament from 2003 to 2006 and again in 2008, before becoming the first leader of the merged Liberal National Party from 2008 to 2009. He led the LNP again from 2015 to 2016 before announcing his retirement. He currently serves as Mayor of Goondiwindi Regional Council, having been elected in March 2020.

Bruce Stephen Flegg is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 2004 to 2015, representing the electorate of Moggill in south-western Brisbane for the Liberal Party and its successor the Liberal National Party. He was the leader of the state Liberal Party from 2006 to 2007 and served as Minister for Housing and Public Works in the Newman government from April to November 2012.
Michael Caltabiano is an Australian former politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Brisbane City Council from 1996 to 2005, and a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 2005 to 2006. He also served briefly as the Director-General of the Department of Transport and Main Roads in the state government of Queensland, Australia until he was sacked by Premier Campbell Newman. Caltabiano was referred to the parliamentarian ethics committee in October 2012, after comments he made two year ago's estimates committee hearing about the employment of Ben Gommers, the son of then arts minister Ros Bates.
Jeffrey William Seeney is a former Australian politician and the former Deputy Premier, Minister for State Development and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning of Queensland. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1998 to 2017, representing Callide for the Nationals (1998–2008) and merged Liberal National Party (2008–2017).
Timothy James Nicholls is an Australian politician and a former leader of the Liberal National Party of Queensland. He served as the Treasurer of Queensland and the Minister for Trade of that state between March/April 2012 and 14 February 2015. He is the member for Clayfield in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. He was originally a member of the Liberal Party including a stint as its deputy leader, but joined the Liberal National Party in 2008 when the Liberal Party and the National Party merged in Queensland.
Graham Quirk is a former Australian politician who served as the 16th Lord Mayor of Brisbane. From 2008 until 2011, he was Deputy Lord Mayor under Campbell Newman, succeeding the latter when Newman stepped down to prepare to contest the 2012 Queensland State Election, at which he was elected as the Premier of Queensland. Quirk served as a Councillor in the City of Brisbane since 1985. Quirk is a member of the Liberal National Party of Queensland, affiliated federally with the Liberal Party of Australia.
