Russian pair Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva were the defending champions, but Zvonareva decided not to participate due to injury. Kuznetsova partnered up with Yanina Wickmayer but they lost in the second round to Nuria Llagostera Vives and Zheng Jie.

María José Martínez Sánchez is a Spanish former professional tennis player. In singles, she won five WTA Tour singles titles, her biggest being a Premier 5 title at the 2010 Italian Open where she defeated two former world No. 1 players, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Janković, en route to the title. As a junior, she won the Orange Bowl and French Open. She reached her career high ranking in singles of world No. 19 on 10 May 2010.

It was her fifth Wimbledon singles title and her 14th major singles title overall. Radwańska became the first Pole to reach a major singles final since Jadwiga Jędrzejowska in 1939, and the first in the Open Era.

Mattek-Sands and Šafářová were playing for the first time as a team in a tournament and each won their first Grand Slam women's doubles title. The victory made them the first new pairing to win the women's doubles tournament at the Australian Open since 2005, as well as the first to win a Grand Slam women's doubles title since the 2007 US Open. After defeating five seeded pairings en route to the win, they became the first unseeded women's doubles duo to clinch the title at the Australian Open since 2012.
