On 13 October 2013, riots in Biryulyovo Zapadnoye, a district in southern Moscow, erupted. The riots were in response to news that Egor Shcherbakov, a 25-year-old man who was killed on 10 October, had allegedly been attacked by a migrant who "might have come from Central Asia or the Caucasus". [2] [3] The footage of Shcherbakov being stabbed was circulated by news agencies.

The police announced a reward of 1 million rubles (~$30,975) for any information about the suspect. [3]

On 14 October, the police arrested more than 1,200 migrant workers where the killer allegedly lived. [4]

On 15 October, Orkhan Zeynalov, an Azerbaijani citizen, was arrested in Kolomna as a suspect in the killing of Shcherbakov. [5] [6]

Bilateral relations between modern-day Armenia and the Russian Federation were established on 3 April 1992, though Russia has been an important actor in Armenia since the early 19th century. The Lame Horse fire occurred on 5 December 2009, around 01:00 local time in the nightclub Khromaya Loshad at 9 Kuybyshev Street, Perm, Russia. The fire started when sparks from pyrotechnics ignited the low ceiling and its willow twig covering. The fire quickly spread to the walls and damaged the building's electrical wiring, causing the lights to fail.

It was followed by increased ethnic tension involving Kyrgyz people and Uzbeks in the south of the country, which escalated in June 2010. The 2010 South Kyrgyzstan ethnic clashes were clashes between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in southern Kyrgyzstan, primarily in the cities of Osh and Jalal-Abad, in the aftermath of the ouster of former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev on 7 April. It is part of the larger Kyrgyz Revolution of 2010. Violence that started between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks on 19 May in Jalal-Abad escalated on 10 June in Osh.

The murder of Egor Sviridov refers to an FC Spartak Moscow fan's death in a clash between two groups of youth, one of which was composed of recent migrants from Russia's North Caucasus republics. Sviridov's death provoked a number of high-profile rallies and rioting in the capital as well as in Saint Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don and other cities across Russia.

The 2013 Little India riot took place on 8 December 2013 after a fatal accident occurred at SST 21:23 at the junction of Race Course Road and Hampshire Road in Little India, Singapore, causing angry mobs of passers-by to attack the bus involved and emergency vehicles that had by then arrived at the location. About 300 migrant labourers were involved in the riot which lasted for around two hours. This was the second riot in post-independence Singapore, and the first in 44 years since the 1969 race riots.

Uzbeks represent a large diaspora in Russia, numbering 1.9 million. Most of the Uzbeks living in Russia are seasonal migrant workers. Most of them have come after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Due to racial and cultural differences, they are one of the most discriminated-against minorities in Russia, and hence rarely settle outside of the Russian capital, Moscow.
