Senate elections were held in Kazakhstan on 1 October 2014 during the 5th convocation of the Kazakh Senate. [1] The elections were held following a decree by then-president Nursultan Nazarbayev. [2]

Seats

All 16 seats representing the regions of Kazakhstan were elected by the local legislative bodies (maslihats). 3,236 out of the 3,279 eligible legislators voted in the election. [3]

Electoral system

Members of the Senate are elected on the basis of indirect suffrage by secret ballot. Half of elected members of the Senate are up for election every three years. Fifteen members are appointed by the President of Kazakhstan with a view to ensuring representation for all the diverse national, cultural components of society. The term of office for the members of the Senate is 6 years. [4]

Structure of Senate

Each of the fourteen regions, and the cities of Almaty and Astana are represented by two senators, while 15 senators are appointed by the President of Kazakhstan. [5]

With the highest-ever nationwide turnout of 95.2%, the result was a victory for long-term incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Nur Otan who received 97.8% of the vote, the largest since 1991, thus winning a fifth term in office while his closest challenger, Turgyn Syzdyqov, received only 1.6% of the votes.

Snap presidential elections were held in Kazakhstan on 9 June 2019 to elect the President of Kazakhstan following the resignation of long-term President Nursultan Nazarbayev in March 2019. This was the sixth presidential election held since Kazakhstan's independence. The elections were not free and fair, and were widely denounced as a sham. Acting president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Nur Otan won the election.

Legislative elections were held in Kazakhstan on 10 January 2021 to elect the members of the Mäjilis to the 7th Parliament of Kazakhstan. They were the eighth legislative elections in Kazakhstan's history since independence and coincided with the 2021 local elections. The elections were the first to be held under Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's presidency and the first since 2004 to be held at the normally scheduled date, rather than due to an early dissolution of the Mäjilis.

Ömirbek Bäigeldi was a Kazakh politician who was a member of the Senate of Kazakhstan where he served as the Chair from 30 January 1996 to 29 November 1999 and then its Deputy Chair from 1 December 1999 to 1 December 2005. Baigeldi had earlier been the Head of the Jambyl Region from 1992 to 1995.

Senate elections were held in Kazakhstan on 12 August 2020 to elect members of the Senate of Kazakhstan for the 6th Parliament of Kazakhstan. All 17 of the 49 seats were up for reelection including the newly created represented seat from the city of Shymkent. 2889 out of total 3069 members of the Mäslihats cast their vote for a Senator representing each region and three cities of republican significance.

Äli Äbdikärimuly Bektaev is a Kazakh politician who's serving as a Senator for Turkistan Region since 1 October 2014. From February 2006 to May 2008, he was the Äkim of Turkistan and continued serving as deputy until 2014. He served as the chairman of Auyl People's Democratic Patriotic Party from 2015 to 2023.

Senate elections were held in Kazakhstan on 8 October 2002. All the 16 represented seats in the Senate were elected by 3304 out of 3153 mäslihat members.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 Kazakh municipal elections</span>

Municipal elections were held in Kazakhstan where 730 äkıms whose four-year terms expired were reelected for the first time directly by the population on 25 July 2021 following an introduction of new law by the Parliament, which allowed for direct elections for äkıms of cities with district importance, villages, and the townships of rural districts. From there, the ruling Nur Otan party won majority of 627 municipal races with most of its candidates being incumbents who occupied the äkım positions prior, followed by the Auyl People's Democratic Patriotic Party, Adal, Ak Zhol Democratic Party, People's Party of Kazakhstan, and the Nationwide Social Democratic Party where it secured local race victory in West Kazakhstan Region.

The 2022 Republic of Buryatia head election took place on 11 September 2022, on common election day. Incumbent Head Alexey Tsydenov was re-elected to a second term.
