The 2015–16 St. John's Red Storm women's basketball team represented St. John's University during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Red Storm, led by fourth-year head coach Joe Tartamella, played their games at Carnesecca Arena and were members of the Big East Conference. They finished the season 23–10, 11–7 in Big East play to finish in fourth place. They won the Big East tournament title for the first time since 1988 and earn an automatic trip to the NCAA women's tournament where they lost to Auburn in the first round.

The St. John's Red Storm is the nickname used for the 17 varsity athletic programs of St. John's University, in the U.S. state of New York. St. John's 17 NCAA Division I teams compete in the Big East Conference, with the exception of the fencing team, which compete in the ECAC. On December 15, 2012, St. John's and the other six Catholic, non-FBS schools announced that they were departing the former Big East for a new conference. The "Catholic 7", after purchasing the "Big East" name from the FBS schools and adding Butler, Creighton, and Xavier, began operating as the new Big East Conference beginning in July 2013.

The 2011 Big East men's basketball tournament, a part of the 2010-11 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, took place from March 8–12, 2011 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This was the third Big East tournament to include all 16 of the conference's teams. The teams finishing 9 through 16 in the regular season standings played first-round games, while teams 5 through 8 received byes to the second round. The top 4 teams during the regular season received double-byes to the quarterfinals. The tournament was won by Connecticut, their seventh title, tying Georgetown for the most championships in Big East Men's Basketball Tournament history. Connecticut guard Kemba Walker was named the tournament MVP.

Saint John's home games were played at Carnesecca Arena and Madison Square Garden and the team is a member of the Big East Conference. They finished the season 21–12, 12–6 in Big East play and lost in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Big East men's basketball tournament to Syracuse. They received an at-large bid in the 2011 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament where they lost in the first round to Gonzaga.

Joanne Persico is the winningest coach at any sport at St. John's University with 540 career wins. She is an American collegiate volleyball coach and former collegiate volleyball player. In 1987, she was named Big East Player of the Year. Since 1994, she has been the women's volleyball head coach at St. John's University in New York City, now an NCAA Division 1 team. In 2006 and 2018, she was named the Big East Coach of the Year. Persico has tallied 540 career victories and six BIG EAST titles throughout her 29 seasons as head coach. Her total is the 23rd most by any active Division I women's volleyball coach. She is the fifth longest tenured women's volleyball coach at a single program and has tallied the seventh most wins among those coaches.
