The 2017 SMU Mustangs women's soccer team represented Southern Methodist University during the 2017 NCAA Division I women's soccer season. The regular season began on August 18 and concluded on October 26. It was the program's 24th season fielding a women's varsity soccer team, and their 5th season in the AAC. The 2017 season was Chris Petrucelli's sixth year as head coach for the program.

The SMU Mustangs men's soccer team represents Southern Methodist University in men's college soccer. The team currently competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Mustangs made their most recent appearance in the NCAA National Tournament in 2019, their third consecutive tournament appearance and fourth in five seasons. In 2019 the Mustangs reached their thirteenth Elite Eight before falling to No.1 Seed Virginia 3–2 in overtime. The Mustangs also claimed their third consecutive American Athletic Conference Tournament Title defeating Central Florida 1–0 in Orlando. This was the third consecutive year UCF and SMU meet in the AAC Tournament final as the Mustangs claimed their fifth conference title over the last three seasons. In 2017, the Mustangs reached the round of sixteen for the 18th time in program history. The 2017 American Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament was the postseason women's soccer tournament for the American Athletic Conference held from November 1 to 5, 2017. The five-match tournament took place at UCF Soccer and Track Stadium, home field of the regular season champion UCF Knights in Orlando, Florida. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The Connecticut Huskies were the defending tournament champions, but they were eliminated from the 2017 tournament with a 3–1 first round loss to the Memphis Tigers. South Florida won the tournament by virtue of winning the penalty shoot-out tiebreaking procedure following a tie with UCF in the final. The conference tournament title was the first for the South Florida women's soccer program and for their head coach, Denise Schilte-Brown.
