The 2017 Vancouver International Film Festival, the 36th event in the history of the Vancouver International Film Festival, was held from September 28 to October 13, 2017. [1]

Contents

The festival's opening gala film was Mina Shum's Meditation Park , and its closing gala was Todd Haynes's Wonderstruck ; [2] during the festival, a special gala was also dedicated to Guy Maddin's film The Green Fog , with its score performed live in the theatre by the Kronos Quartet. [3]

Awards

Award winners were announced on October 13. [4]

Considerable media attention at the time focused on Madonna's behaviour during the festival.

The 43rd annual Toronto International Film Festival was held from September 6 to 16, 2018. In June 2018, the TIFF organizers announced a program to ensure that at least 20 percent of all film critics and journalists given press accreditation to the festival were members of underrepresented groups, such as women and people of color. The People's Choice Award was won by Green Book, directed by Peter Farrelly.

The 2018 Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) took place from September 27 to October 12, 2018.

High Seas is a Spanish mystery series released on Netflix in May 2019. The program is set aboard a transatlantic ocean liner. It stars Ivana Baquero, Alejandra Onieva, Jon Kortajarena, Eloy Azorín, Chiqui Fernández, Tamar Novas, Daniel Lundh, Natalia Rodríguez, Laura Prats, Ignacio Montes, Begoña Vargas, and Manuela Vellés. The show was renewed for a second season in June 2019 and was released on November 22, 2019. Bambú Producciones is the production company behind the series. Actor Jon Kortajarena, who portrays character Nicolás Vázquez, confirmed season three of the show on his official Instagram page on November 6, 2019. A planned fourth season was cancelled by Netflix in mid-2020.

Deragh Campbell is a Canadian actress and filmmaker. She is known for her acclaimed performances in independent Canadian cinema. Her collaborations with filmmaker Sofia Bohdanowicz—Never Eat Alone (2016), Veslemøy's Song (2018), MS Slavic 7 (2019), and Point and Line to Plane (2020)—have screened at film festivals internationally. Campbell has also starred in three of Kazik Radwanski's feature films; she played a small role in How Heavy This Hammer (2015), the lead role in Anne at 13,000 Ft. (2019), and opposite Matt Johnson in Matt and Mara (2024).

The 2020 Vancouver International Film Festival, the 39th event in the history of the Vancouver International Film Festival, was held from September 24 to October 7, 2020. On September 3, organizers announced a lineup of 180 films; due to the COVID-19 pandemic in British Columbia and the associated social distancing restrictions remaining in place at movie theatres and other public venues, the festival took place primarily on the online VIFF Connect platform.

The 38th Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) took place from September 26 to October 11, 2019. The opening film was Atom Egoyan's Guest of Honour, and the closing film was Nicolas Bedos's La Belle Époque.

<i>Call Me Human</i> 2020 Canadian documentary film

Call Me Human is a Canadian documentary film, directed by Kim O'Bomsawin and released in 2020. The film is a portrait of Innu poet Joséphine Bacon.

Moon is a Canadian short drama film, directed by Zoé Pelchat and released in 2020. The film stars Joanie Martel as Babz, an ex-convict working as a waitress in a diner, who is set on a path to redemption when she works up the courage to ask a customer out on a date.
