Kim Nguyen (born 1974) [1] is a Canadian film director and screenwriter, best known for his 2012 film War Witch (Rebelle) which received numerous honours including an Academy Awards nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. [2]

Early life

Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec to a Vietnamese father and a French-Canadian mother, [1] [3] he is a 1997 graduate of Concordia University in Montreal, having earned a BFA. [4] His knowledge of computer-assisted image manipulation was deepened while he taught cinematographic language and screenwriting at the Institut de création artistique et de recherche en infographie (ICARI) and Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montréal. Career

Kim has directed a number of feature films including War Witch (2012) (also known by the French title Rebelle), Eye on Juliet (2017) and The Hummingbird Project (2018). For War Witch, the film was the top winner at the 1st Canadian Screen Awards, in addition to being named Best Picture and winning acting awards for two of its stars, Nguyen himself won the awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, [7] which also earned him an Academy Awards nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. [8] Following War Witch, Kim Nguyen was one of 276 new members invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. [9] In 2019 he was the patron and curator of the Festival Vues dans la tête de... film festival in Rivière-du-Loup. [10] [11]

<i>Monsieur Lazhar</i> 2011 film

Monsieur Lazhar is a 2011 Canadian French-language drama film directed by Philippe Falardeau and starring Mohamed Saïd Fellag, Sophie Nélisse and Danielle Proulx. Based on Bashir Lazhar, a one-character play by Évelyne de la Chenelière, it tells the story of an Algerian refugee in Montreal who steps in to teach at an elementary school after the former full-time teacher dies by suicide.

<i>War Witch</i> 2012 film

War Witch is a 2012 Canadian dramatic war film written and directed by Kim Nguyen and starring Rachel Mwanza, Alain Lino Mic Eli Bastien and Serge Kanyinda. It is about a child soldier forced into a civil war in Africa, and who is believed to be a witch. The film was primarily shot in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in French and Lingala.

Rachel Mwanza is an actress from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, best known for her performance as Komona in the 2012 film War Witch (Rebelle). Prior to being cast in the film, she was homeless and living on the streets of Kinshasa.

<i>Ru</i> (novel) 2009 novel by Kim Thúy

Ru is a novel by Vietnamese-born Canadian novelist Kim Thúy, first published in French in 2009 by Montreal publisher Libre Expression. It was translated into English in 2012 by Sheila Fischman and published by Vintage Canada.

Claude La Haye is a Canadian production sound mixer, best known internationally as the sound mixer of Arrival (2016), for which he won the BAFTA Award for Best Sound and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing. The Prix Iris for Best Film is an annual film award presented Québec Cinéma as part of its Prix Iris program, to honour the year's best film made within the Cinema of Quebec.

Nicolas Bolduc is a Canadian cinematographer from Montreal, Quebec. He won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Cinematography two years in a row, in the 1st Canadian Screen Awards and 2nd Canadian Screen Awards, for War Witch (2012) and Enemy (2013). He also won the Jutra Award for War Witch, and was nominated the next year for Louis Cyr. Bolduc was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Prix Iris in 2017 for Two Lovers and a Bear.

The Prix Iris for Best Makeup is an annual film award, presented by Québec Cinéma as part of its Prix Iris awards program, to honour the year's best makeup work in films made within the Cinema of Quebec.

Marie-Claude Poulin is a Canadian film and television producer from Quebec. Formerly a partner with Pierre Even in Item 7 from 2009 to 2016, she left that firm in 2016 to launch her own company, MCP Productions, before joining Sphere Media in 2021.
