Yokohama FC was one of 22 teams playing in the Japanese J2 League completion in 2018. They came in third place in the League, and qualified for the promotional playoffs for promotion to the J1 League, but were beaten by Tokyo Verdy in the second round of the promotion competition.

Gamba Osaka Under−23 was a Japanese football team based in Suita, Osaka. It was the reserve team of Gamba Osaka and played in J3 League which they have done since their entry to the league at the beginning of the 2016 season. They played the majority of their home games at Panasonic Stadium Suita with some played at Expo '70 Commemorative Stadium.

The 2018 season was Kashima Antlers's 26th consecutive season in the J1 League since professional football was established in Japan in 1993. In addition to the domestic league, the club also competed in the Emperor's Cup, J.League Cup, and AFC Champions League. They won the latter trophy securing their first ever Champions League trophy in their first appearance in the final.

The 2020 season is Cerezo Osaka's fourth consecutive season in the top-division of Japanese football following promotion in 2016. In addition to the J1 League, the club also competes in the 2020 Emperor's Cup and the 2020 J.League Cup.

The 2023 J3 League, referred to as the 2023 Meiji Yasuda J3 League for sponsorship reasons, is the 10th season of the J3 League under its current name.
