470 (dinghy) Olympic sailing class

The 470 (Four-Seventy) is a double-handed monohull planing dinghy with a centreboard, Bermuda rig, and centre sheeting. Equipped with a spinnaker, trapeze and a large sail-area-to-weight ratio, it is designed to plane easily, and good teamwork is necessary to sail it well. The name comes from the boat's length of 470 centimetres.

420 (dinghy) Ship type

The International 420 Dinghy is a sailing dinghy popular for racing and teaching. The hull is fiberglass with internal buoyancy tanks. The 420 has a bermuda rig and an optional spinnaker and trapeze. It has a large sail-area-to-weight ratio, and is designed to plane easily. It can be rigged to be sailed single-handed or double-handed. The 420 is an International class recognized by World Sailing. Peter Burling is a New Zealand sailor. He was the 2021 America's Cup winning skipper and helmsman, and the 2017 America's Cup winning helmsman of Team New Zealand, and won an Olympic gold medal in the 49er class at the 2016 games and Olympic silver medals in the 2012 and 2020 Olympics.

The 470 World Championships have been held every year since 1970 and organised by the International 470 Class Association and recognized by the International Sailing Federation. When the Championship forms part of the ISAF Sailing World Championships the ISAF also organise the event. The 470 is a sailboat class used as equipment for the Olympic Sailing Competition.

Gideon "Gidi" Kliger is an Israeli Olympic sailor, who is a three-time bronze medallist at the sailing world championships.

Mathew "Mat" Belcher, is an Australian sailor and a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 470 dinghy, who currently competes with crew Will Ryan. In 2011, following World Championship and World Cup success, he and Malcolm Page were shortlisted by the International Sailing Federation for the ISAF World Sailor of the Year Awards. Belcher was selected as the Australian flag bearer for the closing ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics after winning a second gold medal and third successive medal in the 470 class.

Hannah Mills, is a British competitive sailor and 2 time world champion in the Women's 470 class, having won in 2012 and 2019. Mills won a silver medal for Team GB with her crew Saskia Clark in the 2012 Olympics, she followed this up with a gold in the same event at both the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and, partnered by Eilidh McIntyre, the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo

Joanna Ayela Aleh is a New Zealand sailor. She is a national champion, a former world champion, and an Olympic gold medallist.

Igor Marenić is a Croatian professional sailor. Competing in the 470 class with Šime Fantela, he won gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics, the 2009 World Championships, and three European Championships.

The main qualification event for sailing at the 2016 Summer Olympics will be the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships. The rest of the quota places will be awarded at the 2015 World Championships and at Continental Qualification Events.

This article details the qualifying phase for sailing at the 2020 Summer Olympics. 350 quota places for the Games are entitled to the sailors coming from their respective NOCs, based on the results at designated regattas supervised by World Sailing. Host nation Japan has been guaranteed one quota place in each of the ten classes.

Eilidh McIntyre is a British sailor, who won the gold medal alongside Hannah Mills in the 470 event at the 2020 Summer Olympics. She won the 2019 470 World Championships, and came second at the 2017 470 World Championships. She finished third at the 2015 470 European Championships, and second at the 2019 and 2021 events, as well as having won multiple ISAF Sailing World Cup medals.

Bianca Caruso is an Italian sailor. She and Elena Berta won the bronze medal at the 2021 470 World Championships. They were officially named to the Italian team on 19 March 2021. They competed in 470 at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Caterina Banti is an Italian sailor who specializes in the Nacra 17 category. She and Ruggero Tita won two medals at the Nacra 17 World Championship, gold in 2018 and bronze in 2017, and three gold medals at the Nacra 17 European Championship, between 2017 and 2020. They were nominated by the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) to compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
