This article displays the qualifying draw for women's singles at the 2021 Australian Open.

Contents

For the first time in Grand Slam history, the qualifying tournament will take place at Aviation Club Tennis Centre in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, due to Australia's quarantine restrictions resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Only qualified players and players eligible for a 'Lucky loser' spot will then be able to travel to Melbourne for the main draw of the 2021 Australian Open. [1]

Lucky losers

The lucky losers draw was made among the players who would be travelling to Australia into a 14-day quarantine period with the highest ranking losing in the qualifying competition: Ysaline Bonaventure, Mihaela Buzărnescu, Margarita Gasparyan, Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, Lesia Tsurenko, Kamilla Rakhimova, Ankita Raina and Varvara Lepchenko. The LL order by order of rankings as of 4 January 2021 was Bonaventure, Buzărnescu, Gasparyan and Schmiedlová.

Naomi Osaka defeated Jennifer Brady in the final, 6–4, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 Australian Open. It was her second Australian Open title and fourth major title overall. With the win, Osaka extended her winning streak to 21 matches, dating to the 2020 Cincinnati Open. She only lost one set during the tournament, to Garbiñe Muguruza in the fourth round; she also saved two match points in that match, making her the eighth woman to win the Australian Open after saving match points. Osaka became the third player in the Open Era, after Monica Seles and Roger Federer, to win their first four major finals.

It was organised as a lead-up tournament to the 2021 Australian Open, and was held at the same venue, due to other tournaments in Australia being cancelled as a result from the COVID-19 pandemic. This tournament took place simultaneously with the 2021 Gippsland Trophy and the 2021 Grampians Trophy. Players who had originally intended to participate in this tournament or the Gippsland Trophy, but were forced to undergo strict quarantine measures upon arrival in Australia, were able to participate in the 2021 Grampians Trophy. The entry list of 2021 Australian Open was used to determine the entry list of this tournament; with half the players playing the Yarra Valley Classic, and the other half playing the 2021 Gippsland Trophy.

Defending champion Ashleigh Barty won the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 Miami Open after Bianca Andreescu retired from the final with the scoreline at 6–3, 4–0. Barty saved a match point en route to the title, in the second round against Kristína Kučová.

Ashleigh Barty defeated Karolína Plíšková in the final, 6–3, 6–7(4–7), 6–3 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
