The 24th Central American and Caribbean Games are scheduled to take place in 2022. They were planned to take place in Panama City, Panama, [1] until the government announced on 24 July 2020 that it had decided to withdraw as the hosts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Panama. Centro Caribe Sports had search for alternatives. In May 2021 San Salvador, El Salvador was chosen to replace Panama City as host.

Bidding process

Panama City had presented itself as the only candidate to organize the 2022 Central American and Caribbean Games and also announced the commitment of the Panamanian State to invest 200 million dollars for both infrastructure and the organization of the event. One of the advantages presented by the Panamanian delegation to Centro Caribe Sports was that it would not be necessary to build an athletes' village for the event, because instead the athletes would be hosted in hotels. On February 3, 2017, Centro Caribe Sports announced that Panama City would host the event. [2] It would have been the third time: Panama City first hosted the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1938 and then in 1970. [3]

On 24 July 2020, Panama announced that it was withdrawing as the host of the 2022 event as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Centro Caribe Sports expressed its surprise at the sudden withdrawal and assured that the event will still take place in 2022. It said the Executive Committee would meet on 25 July 2020 to discuss the issue and begin a search for solutions and alternatives. [4] [5]

On November 15, 2020 Mayagüez, Puerto Rico presented a bid to host the games conditioned that it receive financial support from the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico. Mayagüez previously held the games on 2010, and thus would not have to invest as much on infrastructure since it would reuse most of the facilities. [6]

Venues

Events were originally due to take place at 28 venues, with each event being held in one of four geographically segregated clusters: Panama Center, East Panama, Reverted Area, Amador, and North Panama. Surf was to take place in Playa Venao, near Pedasí, Los Santos. [7]

Bolivarian Games Regional multi-sporting event

The Bolivarian Games are a regional multi-sport event held in honor of Simón Bolívar, and organized by the Bolivarian Sports Organization. The event is open to athletes from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela. In 2010, the ODEBO decided to include Chile as seventh member of ODEBO. 1993 Central American and Caribbean Games Held in Ponce, Puerto Rico

The 17th Central American and Caribbean Games were held in Ponce, a city in southern Puerto Rico. The Games were held 19–30 November 1993, and included 3,570 athletes from 31 nations.

2010 Central American and Caribbean Games Sports events hosted in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico

The 21st Central American and Caribbean Games took place in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, from 18 July 2010 to 1 August 2010.

Carlos Luis Campos is a light flyweight boxer from Venezuela, who won the bronze medal in the men's light flyweight division at the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador. He made his professional debut on 18 April 2004.

Emilio Ballado Alvarado is a Mexican former boxer who represented his native country in the 1935 Central American and Caribbean Games and in the 1936 Summer Olympics.

The El Salvador national under 21 football team, is the national under-21 football team of El Salvador and is controlled by the Federación Salvadoreña de Fútbol. The team competes in the international under-21 and youth football competitions. They compete for qualification to the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Football at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games

The Association football competition at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games were set to start 21 July, although qualification took take place beforehand. All participants had to be born on or after 1 January 1989. On 13 July 2010 the organizing committee for the games (Comaz) announced that the event would not be held because CONCACAF had threatened to sanction countries that participated.

Lake Cerrillos Man-made lake located in Maragüez, Ponce, Puerto Rico

Lake Cerrillos is a man-made lake located in barrio Maragüez, Ponce, Puerto Rico. The lake was finished in 1992 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The main purposes of the reservoir are flood control, water supply, and recreation. There is a variety of fish available for fishing such as largemouth bass, bluegills, catfish and tilapias. The 1993 Central American and Caribbean Games that were held in Ponce staged the canoeing competitions in this lake. It was used in the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games for the sports of Canoeing, Rowing. The lake is the main drinking water source for the city of Ponce.

Cancha Wilfredo Toro is an arena in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico. It hosted some of the Taekwondo and Karate events for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.

La Sebastina is a horse racing facility in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. It hosted the Equestrian events for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.

2010 Central American Games

The IX Central American Games was a multi-sport event that took place between 9 and 19 April 2010. The competition featured 23 sports which were contested at various venues, with Panama acting as the primary host country and El Salvador playing a supporting role.

2018 Central American and Caribbean Games

The 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games were held in Barranquilla, Colombia.

The VIII Central American Games was a multi-sport event that took place between 3 and 12 March 2006.

The Field hockey competition at the Central American and Caribbean Games is an international field hockey event organized by the Central American and Caribbean Sports Organization (CACSO) as part of the Central American and Caribbean Games. The men's competition was introduced in 1982, and women's field hockey competition was first organized during the 1986 games. The winning teams qualify for the next Pan American Games.

Racquetball has been included at the Central American and Caribbean Games since 1990. Over that period Mexican players have dominated the podium, winning gold at every event in Men’s and Women’s Doubles, and winning gold in Men’s and Women’s Singles all but two times each. Mexico has also won every gold medal in the Men’s and Women’s Team events. Venezuela has the second most medals in men’s events, while the Dominican Republic has won the second most medals in women’s events.

Badminton competition at the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games took place between 19–30 November in San Salvador, El Salvador. It was the second appearance for badminton at the Games. There were 48 athletes from 9 different countries competed in five events.

Tennis has been an event at the Central American and Caribbean Games since 1926. It was not held in Panama City in 1970, but has otherwise been a permanent sport. Cuba's Juan Pino is the most successful Central American and Caribbean Games tennis player of all-time, in terms of medals won (12).

The 2022 Central American Games, the XII edition of the Central American Games, will be hosted in Santa Tecla, El Salvador. This will be the second time that the games will be hosted outside the capital of the country.
