Three retirees were announced in the days following St Kilda's final game of 2021, while Dylan Roberton had announced his retirement in January. While the Saints' lost 612 games of experience, combined the retirees only managed 10 games in 2021.

The fixture for the 2022 season was released on 9 December 2021, with only the first nine rounds released with dates and times for each match. The remainder of the fixture from round 10 was left as a floating fixture so as to prioritize the best matches for each round in prime-time slots, and dates were released progressively through the year. Tom Campbell is a professional Australian rules footballer currently playing for the St Kilda Football Club. Campbell previously played for the Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne Football Clubs in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was recruited by the club in the 2012 Rookie Draft, with pick #27. Campbell made his debut in Round 13, 2012, against Brisbane Lions at Docklands, having been promoted to the senior list to replace the suspended ruckman Will Minson. After being delisted by the Bulldogs at the conclusion of the 2018 AFL season, Campbell joined North Melbourne as a rookie in the AFL's new supplemental selection period (SSP). On his debut for North Melbourne, senior coach Brad Scott described Campbell as a fierce competitor who gives his all for the team. Campbell reached his 50th AFL game during the 2021 season, where he was lauded by his teammates and coaches for his leadership and guidance while playing tandem in the ruck with Todd Goldstein. Campbell was delisted by the Kangaroos in October 2021, but signed with St Kilda as a delisted free agent the following month. He made his St Kilda debut against Port Adelaide at Cazalys stadium, Cairns during round 7 of the 2022 season.

The 2019 Hawthorn Football Club season was the club's 95th season in the Australian Football League and 118th overall, the 20th season playing home games at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the 19th season playing home games at the University of Tasmania Stadium, the 15th season under head coach Alastair Clarkson, and the 1st season with Ben Stratton as club captain. A 19-point loss to Sydney in round 14 meant that Hawthorn could not match their 15–7 record from 2018. A 70-point win over Gold Coast meant that for a tenth-consecutive season Hawthorn won at least 10 games. Hawthorn finished the season in ninth-place with an 11–11 record, thus missing the finals for the second time in the last three seasons.
