The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) is an NCAA Division I conference. The WAC covers a broad expanse of the western United States with member institutions located in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah and Washington along with the Midwest state of Illinois and the Southern state of Texas.
The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The New Mexico State Aggies baseball team represents New Mexico State University, which is located in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Aggies are an NCAA Division I college baseball program that competes in the Western Athletic Conference. They began competing in Division I in 1962 and joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2006.

Reggie Aaron Christiansen is an American college baseball coach who has served as head coach of the Sacramento State Hornets baseball team since 2011. Christiansen was previously head coach at Menlo and South Dakota State. At Sacramento State, Christiansen has over 360 wins, with two Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2012 and 2014 and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2014, 2017, and 2019.

The winner earned the Western Athletic Conference's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.

The 2021 NCAA Division I baseball season play of college baseball in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level, began on February 19, 2021. The season progressed through the regular season, many conference tournaments and championship series, and concluded with the 2021 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament and 2021 College World Series. The College World Series, consisting of the eight remaining teams in the NCAA Tournament and held annually in Omaha, Nebraska at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, ended on June 30, 2021. The Mississippi State Bulldogs won the tournament, and were consequently named national champions.

Play will progress through the regular season, various conference tournaments and championship series, and conclude with the 2022 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament and 2022 College World Series. The College World Series, consisting of the eight remaining teams in the NCAA Tournament and held annually in Omaha, Nebraska, at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, will end in June 2022.
