The Ocean Race 2023 was the 14th edition of the round-the-world The Ocean Race. It started in Alicante, Spain. [1]

Contents

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the organizers to delay the race planned for 2021–22. [2]

Participants

A total of 11 boats participated in the race, 5 in the IMOCA 60 class and 6 in the Volvo Ocean 65 class. [3]

Route

The route and stopover dates for the 2023 edition have been announced in December 2021. [4] The VO65 class boats only participate in the first and the last two legs, for "The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup". [5]

The Velux 5 Oceans Race was a round-the-world single-handed yacht race, sailed in stages, managed by Clipper Ventures since 2000. Its most recent name comes from its main sponsor Velux. Originally known as the BOC Challenge, for the title sponsor BOC, the first edition was in 1982. In the late 1990s the race was renamed the Around Alone. The 2010-11 race was the last to take place and attracted just five entries. The event has not been held since.

The 2011–12 Volvo Ocean Race was the 11th edition of the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, yacht race which started with an in-port race in Alicante, Spain on 29 October 2011 with six Volvo Open 70 yachts at the start line and ended with an in-port race in Galway, Ireland on 7 July 2012. The 39,270 NM route involved stopovers and in-port races in Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, Itajaí, Miami, Lisbon, Lorient, and finally Galway. The race consisted of nine ocean races and ten in-port races.

The Volvo Ocean 65 is a class of monohull racing yachts. It is the successor to the Volvo Open 70 yacht used in past editions of the Volvo Ocean Race. It was announced at a conference in Lorient, France, during a stopover in the 2011–12 Volvo Ocean Race. The yacht was used for the 2014–2015, the 2017–2018 and the 2023 editions. The 2014–2015 Volvo Ocean Race was the first one-design event.

Alex Pella is a Spanish yachtsman. In 2014 he became the first Spaniard to win a transoceanic single-handed race, the Route du Rhum. Alex Pella made history once again, on 26 January 2017, when he broke, with the rest of the team, the absolute round-the-world speed sailing record, known as the Jules Verne Trophy, aboard the sophisticated maxi-multihull IDEC 3. They circumnavigated the planet in 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds.

The Ocean Race Europe is an offshore yacht race around Europe created and run by the organisers of The Ocean Race. Its inaugural edition is the 2021 Ocean Race Europe, which began 25 May 2021 as a three-leg course from Lorient, France to Genoa, Italy. A second edition is planned for 2025

Susann Beucke is a German sailor who competes offshore races of the Figaro Bénéteau 3 and IMOCA 60 classes. Before focusing on offshore sailing she competed in Olympic sailing, primarily in the 49er FX class, winning the silver medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo along with Tina Lutz, representing Germany.

The 2024–2025 Vendée Globe is a non-stop round the world yacht race for IMOCA 60 class yachts crewed by only one person. It will be the tenth edition of the race, and will start and finish in Les Sables-d'Olonne, France. The race is scheduled to begin on 10 November 2024.

Malizia-Seaexplorer (3) or Team Malizia (3), is an IMOCA 60 monohull sailing yacht, designed by VPLP and Boris Herrmann and constructed by Multiplast in France and launched on 19 July 2022. It has been designed for the Vendée Globe 2024, a solo tour of the world, but also participated in The Ocean Race 2023, a crewed around-the-world tour. Its skipper is the German yatchsman Boris Herrmann.
