He was the general secretary of Gazipur metropolitan Awami League until he was expelled by Awami League central working committee on 19 November 2021. Jahangir was pardoned and got back his Awami League membership on 1 January 2023. The LGRD Ministry suspended Alam on 25 November 2021 from the mayor post of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) on the allegations of illegal land grabbing, not compensating people after taking over land for development and working against the public interest.

Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad, commonly known BSRC is a Bangladeshi democratic student organization to promote and protect general students' right, to reform quotas and eliminate all types of discriminations in the recruitment of government employees. The organization first came to prominence in 2018 for leading Bangladesh quota reform movement. Due to the movement's increasing popularity, Bangladesh government accepted its five-point demands and abolished quotas in the recruitment of Bangladesh Civil Service cadres though no reform was announced in the recruitment of lower grade officers. In July 2018, many involved in the demonstrations of the organization were brutally attacked. In July 2018, the embassies of Germany, USA, Norway, Switzerland and few other countries in Dhaka expressed their concern over the 'brutal attacks' on peaceful demonstration of Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad. For 2019 DUCSU election, the organization announced its panel on 25 February 2019. The organization made Nurul Haq Nur vice-president candidate of the panel and Muhammad Rashed Khan general secretary contender and Faruk Hasan assistant general secretary nominee.

The 2023 Bangladeshi presidential election was scheduled for Sunday, 19 February 2023 to elect the 22nd President of Bangladesh. The 2022 Rangpur City Corporation election was a Bangladeshi local governmental election held on 27 December 2022. The City Corporation elections are held every five years, and this was the third of its kind in Rangpur. The mayor and 44 councilors of the corporation were elected in this election. A total of 9 candidates contested in the mayoral election, and other 246 contesting for general councils and reserved (women) seats. Jatiya Party's Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa held the mayoral post by winning in a huge margin with ruling Awami League's candidate landing as fourth.

As the 11th parliament is scheduled to be expire on 29 January 2024 and the Election Commission has announced to hold the next Bangladeshi general election between late December 2023 to early January 2024, all candidates elected by these by-polls will be members of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad.

He was elected unopposed in the 2023 presidential election in the nomination of the ruling Awami League. Prior to his presidency, he served as a district and sessions judge and a commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission from 2011 to 2016.

He is a councillor of the Bangladesh Cricket Board from Mymensingh.
