Duan Yingying and Veronika Kudermetova were the reigning champions from when the event was last held in 2019, [1] but did not participate together as Duan had retired from the sport. Kudermetova partnered Chan Hao-ching, but lost in the quarterfinals to Asia Muhammad and Jessica Pegula.
The top four seeds received a bye into the second round.

The Czech Republic's Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková defeated Switzerland's Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic in the final, 7–5, 6–1 to win the gold medal in women's doubles tennis at the 2020 Summer Olympics. It was the Czech Republic's first victory in women's doubles, and its third consecutive medal. In the bronze medal match, Brazil's Laura Pigossi and Luisa Stefani defeated Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina of the Russian Olympic Committee, 4–6, 6–4, [11–9]. It was Brazil's first Olympic tennis medal.
Gabriela Dabrowski and Jeļena Ostapenko were the defending champions, but chose not to participate together. Dabrowski played alongside Xu Yifan, but lost in the first round to Lara Arruabarrena and Kaitlyn Christian. Ostapenko teamed up with Veronika Kudermetova, but lost in the semifinals to Chan Hao-ching and Latisha Chan.
Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová defeated Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan in the final, 6−2, 6−4 to win the ladies' doubles tennis title at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. With the win, Strýcová attained the WTA no. 1 doubles ranking for the first time – Kristina Mladenovic, Elise Mertens and Ashleigh Barty were also in contention for the top ranking. Hsieh and Strýcová won the title without losing a set during the tournament.
Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka defeated Ashleigh Barty and Victoria Azarenka in the final, 7–5, 7–5, to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2019 US Open. It was both players' first major doubles title.
Elise Mertens and Demi Schuurs were the defending champions, but chose not to participate together. Schuurs teamed up with Anna-Lena Grönefeld, but lost in the semifinals to Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka.
Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic defeated Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová in the final, 6–2, 6–1 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2020 Australian Open. It was their second Australian Open title together. Despite the loss, Hsieh regained the WTA no. 1 doubles ranking for the first time since 2014, replacing her partner Strýcová. Mladenovic, Aryna Sabalenka and Xu Yifan were also in contention for the top ranking.

The Gippsland Trophy is a new addition to the WTA Tour in 2021.
Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka defeated Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková in the final, 6–2, 6–3, to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2021 Australian Open. It was their second major doubles title as a team, after the 2019 US Open. With the win, Sabalenka claimed the world No. 1 doubles ranking.
Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová were the defending champions, but Strýcová retired from professional tennis in May 2021. Hsieh played alongside Elise Mertens, but lost in the second round to Sharon Fichman and Giuliana Olmos.

Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan defeated Asia Muhammad and Ena Shibahara in the final, 7–5, 7–6(7–4) to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. They became the first all-Chinese team to win a WTA 1000-level title.
Gabriela Dabrowski and Giuliana Olmos defeated Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schuurs in the final, 7–6(7–1), 5–7, [10–7] to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2022 Madrid Open. This was Dabrowski's third consecutive final at the tournament, having lost the previous two editions in 2021 and 2019.
Veronika Kudermetova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated reigning champion Giuliana Olmos and partner Gabriela Dabrowski in the final, 1–6, 6–4, [10–7] to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2022 Italian Open.

Storm Hunter and Kateřina Siniaková defeated Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez in the final, 6–4, 6–2 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championships.
Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini defeated Chan Hao-ching and Veronika Kudermetova in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2024 China Open. It was the seventh WTA 1000 doubles title for Errani and second for Paolini.
