Salva Kiir Mayardit, commonly known as Salva Kiir, is a South Sudanese politician who has been the President of South Sudan since its independence on 9 July 2011. Prior to independence, he was the President of the Government of Southern Sudan, as well as First Vice President of Sudan, from 2005 to 2011. He was named Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2005, following the death of John Garang.
Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon is a South Sudanese politician who has served as the First Vice President of South Sudan since 2020.

The South Sudanese Civil War was a multi-sided civil war in South Sudan fought from 2013 to 2020, between forces of the government and opposition forces. The Civil War caused rampant human rights abuses, including forced displacement, ethnic massacres, and killings of journalists by various parties. Since its end South Sudan has been governed by a coalition formed by leaders of the former warring factions, Salva Kiir Mayardit and Riek Machar. In 2024, the country continues to recover from the war while experiencing ongoing and systemic ethnic violence.

John Uliny, also known as Johnson Olony, Johnson Olonyi, and John Olony, is a South Sudanese militia leader. He is a member of the Shilluk ethnic group. He has at various points in time been allied with the South Sudan Democratic Movement, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition and has led his own Agwelek Forces. He fought the South-Sudanese government in Upper Nile State between 2016 and 2018.
Eastern Nile was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 14 January 2017 when it was divided into Central Upper Nile State and Northern Upper Nile State. It was located in the Greater Upper Nile region and it was part of the former states of Upper Nile and Jonglei. The state bordered the states of Eastern Bieh, Latjoor, Western Bieh, Fashoda State, and the country of Ethiopia to the east.

Joseph Nguen Monytuil was the Governor of Unity State - Bentiu, South Sudan, a post he has held since July 7th, 2013 to 20th May 2024 when he was relieved and replaced by the president of the Republic of South Sudan H.E Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit with H.E Justice Riek Bim Top. He was the first governor of Northern Liech State, which was created by President Salva Kiir on 2 October 2015. Before his appointment as the governor of Northern Liech, he was the caretaker governor of the former Unity State deputized by Colonel Miabek Lang Miading Bil-Kuei from Panriang who was later replaced with the current deputy governor H.E James Tor Tunggur Kueiguong from SPLM-IO party. Joseph's predecessor is the current vice president for infrastructure Cluster of the Republic of South Sudan, Gen. Taban Deng Gai.
Simon Gatwech Dual is a Sudanese rebel Major General who was born in around the late 1930s in what is today Uror County, Jonglei state, South Sudan.
Mathiang Anyoor, also spelled Mathiang Anyur, also known as Dot Ke Beny, is a Dinka-affiliated militia group in South Sudan. Originally an ad-hoc volunteer force founded in 2012, the militia was transformed into a private army to protect President Salva Kiir Mayardit and army chief Paul Malong Awan. However, the South Sudanese military (SPLA) claims that it is just another battalion. Much of the ethnic violence against non-Dinkas in the South Sudanese Civil War is attributed to the militia.
AmbassadorEzekiel Lol Gatkuoth is a South Sudanese retired diplomat and politician and a former Minister of Petroleum of the Republic of South Sudan, after having been appointed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Tuesday 2 August 2016.
James Tor Monybuny is a South Sudanese politician who has been the deputy governor of Upper Nile State since January 2021, and was the first governor of Central Upper Nile State from 2017-2019. Monybuny is from Baliet, and is a member of the Ngok Lual Yak section of the Padang Dinka. Earlier in his career, Monybuny was a pastor for the Presbyterian Church in South Sudan and the Baliet County commissioner.

The Nuer massacre, which occurred from December 15 to December 18, 2013, was a well-organized, intentional mass killing perpetrated against thousands of Nuer civilians by Dinka SPLA soldiers, Presidential Guard - Tiger Division, and Mathiang Anyoor, supported by Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), orchestrated by the President of the Republic of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit, Jieng Council of Elders (JCE), and Dinka high-ranking military generals within the SPLA army in Juba. More than 47,000 Nuer civilians were massacred in four days between December 15 and December 18, 2013. A couple of years later, the death toll was projected to be over 50,000 Nuer civilians as fighting rapidly engulfed the entire region of the Upper Nile.
