Early in the morning of July 19, 2025, a driver rammed his car into a crowd of people in the East Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, United States. [2] More than 30 were injured, including 7 critically. [3] Enraged bystanders dragged the driver from his vehicle, beat him, and shot him. [3]
The attack occurred around 2 a.m. on July 19, 2025, outside a music club near the intersection of North Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard. [2] The driver had been kicked out of the club twice for being intoxicated and disruptive to others, as well as fighting with other people. [3] Eight minutes after being kicked out the venue for a second time, the driver started up his Nissan Versa, mounted onto the sidewalk and drove into a crowd of clubgoers, valets, and taco vendors. [2] [4] By the time police officers arrived, members of the crowd had pulled the driver from the car and were beating him. Emergency medical personnel subsequently found the driver had been shot. [2] Video footage taken by bystanders showed the driver being kicked in the head and squirted with condiments. [3]
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said the car ramming attack was intentional and the driver was shot after the attack; the bystander who shot the attacking driver escaped, and remains on the run. [3] Following the shooting of Ramírez, the Los Angeles Police Department released photos of a man they believe shot the driver. The LAPD described him as a Hispanic male, bald, 5-foot-6 or 5-foot-7, 150 to 170 pounds, and was seen wearing a blue Dodgers jacket, a light-blue shirt with the number "5" in jersey font, blue jeans, gauges (wide piercings) in both ears, and a goatee. [5]
The LAPD identified the suspected driver as 29-year-old Fernando Ramírez (born 1995/1996) of San Clemente, California. [6] [7]
The LAPD replied in a statement that Ramírez had an extensive criminal history across both Greater Los Angeles and Orange County, with a total of 11 criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to felonies between 2014 and January 2022, including a 2014 gang-related felony assault where he served two years in California prison, and a June 15, 2019 hate crime when Ramírez sucker punched a 26-year-old African-American man in the face at a Laguna Beach Whole Foods Market parking lot. He was sentenced to four years in prison for both hate crime and battery in January 2020, but only served halfway before being released in November 2021. [8]
After being beaten, kicked in the head, and shot by a fleeing bystander, the driver was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital in stable condition. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce greater bodily injury. After being released from the hospital, he was booked into the Los Angeles County Jail on July 21. [9] According to the LAPD, Ramírez had faced the same exact charge from a separate incident several years prior. [10]
Mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass called the event a "heartbreaking tragedy". [11]
