On 19 January 2026, at 11:21:12 PST (UTC+5), a Mw 5.6 earthquake struck near Barishal, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Two people were killed and four others were injured.
The earthquake struck in Barishal, a town in the far north of Pakistan near the Afghanistan–China border and Durand Line. The earthquake severely affected the valley of Chapursan in Hunza district. [2] The earthquake was felt across the Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir regions, and as far away as Islamabad, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and Kazakhstan. [3] Tremors were also felt in Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. [4] 1,896,000 people were estimated to have felt weak shaking, 731,000 light, and 13,000 moderate. USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. [5]
Two people were killed and four others were injured. [6] [2] [7] Dozens of houses, cattle sheds, and public and private properties were damaged. [8] Over 300 houses were damaged, with cracks appearing in walls. [7] [4] Buildings also experienced shaking. [9] The access road to Chapursan was blocked at multiple locations, while several kacha houses and cattle sheds were damaged or collapsed. [10] Large cracks developed in parts of the valley, while roads and water channels supplying power houses were also damaged. Two children and a woman were injured in the valley and were transported to the Rural Health Centre (RHC) Hospital in Sust after receiving initial medical aid. Vehicles were buried under rubble. The earthquake also triggered landslides that blocked the Karakoram Highway and several other roads. Machinery from the Gilgit-Baltistan Communication and Works Department were mobilised to clear the roads, and the highway and several link roads have since been reopened for traffic. Heavy landslides also occurred in mountainous areas, with clouds of dust seen rising from the slopes. One of the landslides struck a motorcycle near Barswat Lake in Ishkoman Valley, Ghizer district. A 60-year-old man was killed while a 35-year-old man was injured and transported to the Imit Dispensary in stable condition. The deputy commissioner said damage assessment was under way and would be completed once road access was fully restored. [2]
