21c Museum Hotels is a contemporary art museum and boutique hotel chain based in Louisville, Kentucky. The chain also has locations in Lexington, Kentucky; Cincinnati, Ohio; Chicago, Illinois; Bentonville, Arkansas; Durham, North Carolina; St. Louis, Missouri; and Kansas City, Missouri;. [1] Each of these eight properties comprises a boutique hotel, a contemporary art museum, and a restaurant. It was acquired by the French hotel group Accor in July 2018 for $51 million.
21c Museum Hotel was voted among the Top 10 Hotels in the World in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards in 2009, 2010 and 2011. [2] It was also voted as the #1 Hotel in the South in the 2012 Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards.
21c Museum Hotel, Cincinnati was named the top hotel in America and the 11th in the world in 2013 by Condé Nast Traveler's annual reader survey. [3]
21c was launched in 2006 by philanthropists and art collectors Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson. They were inspired to create 21c after seeing farmland and rural landscapes developed while the historic buildings of Louisville's downtown sat vacantly. They created 21c in Louisville's downtown arts and theater district to support urban renewal and regional agriculture, and have developed partnerships with local growers to supply products and ingredients for the Proof on Main restaurant and bar.
Co-founder Craig Greenberg was named the company's president in 2012 and chief executive officer in September 2017. [4] He stepped down from 21c in June 2020. [5]
Following the success of the Louisville location, additional 21c locations were opened, with eight [6] currently in operation and another in the planning stages.
After 21c was acquired by Accor, Brown and Wilson maintained a 15% stake. They continued to be involved with the company. [7]
In 2023, the Oklahoma City and Nashville locations were both rebranded under new owners. OKC becoming the Hyatt’s Fordson and Nashville becoming The Bankers Alley Hotel Nashville, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.
21c Museum is North America's only museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting contemporary art of the 21st century. [8] The museum is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It is free to visit. More than twenty special exhibitions and installations have been organized by the 21c Museum since its opening in 2006.

21c Museum has presented projects by Mikhail Baryshnikov and John Waters, as well as traveling exhibitions including "Marc Swanson: Beginning to See the Light", organized by the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, and "Constant World: the Work of Jennifer and Kevin McCoy", organized by Beall Center for Art and Technology.
The 21c Museum features permanent installations and special exhibitions of works by artists, including Bill Viola, Tony Oursler, Andres Serrano, Sam Taylor-Wood, David Levinthal, Yyinka Shonibare, Judy Fox, Chuck Close, Alfredo Jaar, David Herbert, Daan Roosegaarde, Anastasia Schipani, Kara Walker, and Serkan Özkaya.

In its Louisville location, 21c renovated five 19th-century warehouse buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places to house the museum, hotel, and restaurant. It is located within the city's arts and theater district along "Museum Row", which is home to the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, the Frazier History Museum, the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, and the Kentucky Science Center. This location has a restaurant called Proof on Main, which was named one of the "Best New Restaurants of 2006" by the Esquire magazine. [9] The menu features ingredients from local farms and food purveyors, as well as 50 types of bourbon. [10] Located outside the establishment stands "The Statue of David", a double-size, golden replica of Michelangelo's David, created by Turkish artist Serkan Özkaya. [11] Originally a project for the Istanbul Biennial art exhibition, the statue collapsed under its weight. Özkaya salvaged and restored the statue and created two more casts, one of which was acquired by 21c Museum Hotels. [12]
Deborah Berke & Partners Architects designed the facility, for which they won the American Institute of Architects Kentucky Honor Award in 2011, [13] the AIA NYS Excellence for Historic Preservation/Adaptive Reuse in 2007, [14] and the Best of Year Award for Hospitality Design, Interior Design Magazine, in 2006. [15] The hotel was also inducted into Historic Hotels of America, the official publication of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. [16]
In its Cincinnati location, 21c undertook the complete renovation of the historic Hotel Metropole, a building previously used for housing low-income residents. It cost $48 million to renovate the hotel. [17]
The third location opened in Bentonville in 2013. The hotel is located on land that was once a cornfield outside the urban center of Bentonville. [18] The Bentonville location was named one of the top 15 hotels in the US by the Travel + Leisure Magazine in 2017. [19]
In March 2015, 21c opened its fourth hotel in Durham, North Carolina. [20] In 2013, the company bought the historic Hill Building for $5.25 million. With an investment of $48 million, the Hill Building was renovated and converted into a hotel with 125 rooms. [21] [22] The hotel is centrally located in Downtown Durham and is a short walk from the Durham Bulls Stadium, the DPAC, and the Carolina Theater.
In February 2016, the Lexington hotel opened in the Fayette National Bank Building. [23] [24]
In June 2016, 21c opened a hotel in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in the Fred Jones Assembly Plant. The plant was built in 1915 and was known for being where the Ford Model T was assembled. [25] [26] In 2023, the location was released by 21c and became the Hyatt’s Fordson.
In May 2017, the Nashville hotel opened in the historic Gray & Dudley building in downtown. [27] In 2023 the location was released by 21c and became The Bankers Alley Hotel Nashville, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.
In July 2018, the group opened their 120 suite and gallery hotel in Kansas City, Missouri, inside the historic Savoy Hotel and Grill. [28]
In February 2020, 21c opened a hotel in Chicago, Illinois, renovating The James Hotel in Chicago's River North Gallery District [29] with 297 rooms and over 10,000 square feet of exhibition and meeting space.
Additional properties are in active development, including a location in Pittsburgh in 2024, & St. Louis, Missouri, [30] which is expected to open in 2023. The future of another planned location in Des Moines, Iowa is unclear now that "The Fifth" project, of which it was due to be a part, has stalled. [31]
The company had been looking to open a hotel in Indianapolis in the old city hall, with construction scheduled to begin in 2017; however, these plans were scrapped at the end of March 2017 due to problems with financing. [32]
Each 21c location has an onsite restaurant, with many receiving recognition and awards, including multiple James Beard Foundation Award finalists for excellence in cuisine. [33]

Hotel Adolphus is an upscale hotel in the Main Street District of Downtown Dallas Dallas, Texas. A Dallas Landmark, it was for several years the tallest building in the state. Today, the hotel is part of Marriott Hotel's Autograph Collection.
S. H. Kress & Co. was the trading name of a chain of five and dime retail department stores in the United States established by Samuel Henry Kress. It operated from 1896 to 1981. In the first half of the 20th century, there were Kress stores with ornamented architecture in hundreds of cities and towns.
Downtown Louisville is the largest central business district in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the urban hub of the Louisville, Kentucky Metropolitan Area. Its boundaries are the Ohio River to the north, Hancock Street to the east, York and Jacob Streets to the south, and 9th Street to the west. As of 2015, the population of downtown Louisville was 4,700, although this does not include directly surrounding areas such as Old Louisville, Butchertown, NuLu, and Phoenix Hill.
The Kentucky Railway Museum, now located in New Haven, Kentucky, United States, is a non-profit railroad museum dedicated to educating the public regarding the history and heritage of Kentucky's railroads and the people who built them. Originally created in 1954 in Louisville, Kentucky, the museum is at its third location, in extreme southern Nelson County. It is one of the oldest railroad stations in the United States.

The West Main District is one of the five districts of downtown Louisville, Kentucky. The district, or a portion of it, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as West Main Street Historic District, due to its containment of some of the oldest structures in the city. The buildings of this district boast the largest collection of cast iron façades of anywhere outside New York's SoHo district. The district also features "Museum Row", a collection of several notable museums located within just a few blocks of each other.
The urban development patterns of Lexington, Kentucky, confined within an urban growth boundary that protects its famed horse farms, include greenbelts and expanses of land between it and the surrounding towns. This has been done to preserve the region's horse farms and the unique Bluegrass landscape, which bring millions of dollars to the city through the horse industry and tourism. Urban growth is also tightly restricted in the adjacent counties, with the exception of Jessamine County, with development only allowed inside existing city limits. In order to prevent rural subdivisions and large homes on expansive lots from consuming the Bluegrass landscape, Fayette and all surrounding counties have minimum lot size requirements, which range from 10 acres (40,000 m2) in Jessamine to fifty in Fayette.
Serkan Özkaya is a Turkish-American conceptual artist whose work deals with topics of appropriation and reproduction. He typically operates outside of traditional art spaces and often makes multiple versions of even his own work, including his most noted work David. Özkaya's artworks are held in the permanent collections of the İstanbul Modern, Borusan Contemporary Art, and Arter in Istanbul, as well as three different 21c Museum Hotels locations—Louisville, Kentucky; Bentonville, Arkansas; and Nashville, Tennessee.
The Scotsman Hotel Edinburgh opened in 2001 in the Edwardian (1905) building which had housed The Scotsman newspaper for nearly a century. The hotel is located on North Bridge between the Royal Mile and Princes Street, thereby straddling Edinburgh’s Medieval Old Town and Georgian New Town.
Nimb Hotel, or simply the Nimb, is a five-star boutique hotel in the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark. The hotel is located in a historic building from 1909 and was built in a Moorish-inspired Historicist style. In 2009, Condé Nast Traveller ranked it as #40 on their list of the best hotels in the world.
Palace Hotel Tokyo is a luxury hotel located in the Marunouchi business district of Tokyo, Japan. The hotel has 290 guestrooms and facilities, including 10 restaurants and bars, a spa, a fitness center, swimming pool and a business center.
The Hill Building is a 17-story modernistic skyscraper located in Durham, North Carolina. Built in 1935–1937, the Hill Building was designed by New York City architecture firm Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, best known for the design of the Empire State Building.
The Savoy Hotel and Grill was a historic hotel and restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri. The Savoy Hotel was the oldest continuously operating hotel in the United States west of the Mississippi River until it closed in 2016 to undergo extensive renovation by 21c Museum Hotels and reopened in 2018. In 1974 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as "Savoy Hotel and Grill". It is now called "21c Museum Hotel Kansas City".

David (inspired by Michelangelo) is a sculpture by Turkish conceptual artist Serkan Özkaya. It is a reproduction of Michelangelo's David made of gold-painted foam, twice the size of the original, and based on a computer model by Stanford University professor Marc Levoy. It was originally created for the 9th International Istanbul Biennial in 2005, and took six people six months to build, but it collapsed during installation.
The Mark Hotel is a luxury hotel, situated at 25 East 77th Street, at Madison Avenue, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Originally constructed in 1927 in the Renaissance Revival style, the building was purchased by Izak Senbahar of Alexico Group and Simon Elias in 2006 and the building's interiors were reimagined by French designer Jacques Grange in 2009.
Designed by Joseph G. Steinkamp & Brother, the Neoclassical-styled Hotel Metropole opened in 1912 in downtown Cincinnati as a 10-story hotel. In 1924 an 11th floor penthouse apartment was added. In 1971 the building was converted to low-income housing with retail and restaurants on the first floor.
The Fayette National Bank Building, also known as the First National Bank Building or 21C Museum Hotel Lexington, is a historic 15-story high-rise in Lexington, Kentucky. The building was designed by the prominent architecture firm McKim, Mead & White and built by the George A. Fuller Company from 1913 to 1914. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 27, 1980.
The InterContinental Marseille – Hotel Dieu is a five-star luxury hotel near the Vieux-Port area of Marseille, France. Housed in the Hôtel-Dieu de Marseille building, which served as the city's primary hospital (Hôtel-Dieu) for over eight hundred years, the hotel opened on April 25, 2013, in conjunction with the ongoing Euroméditerranée project. The hotel is part of the InterContinental hotel chain, and it is the fourth InterContinental property in France.
Historic Hotels of America is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation that was founded in 1989 with 32 charter members; the program accepts nominations and identifies hotels that have maintained their authenticity, sense of place, and architectural integrity. In 2015, the program included over 260 members in 44 states, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2022, the program includes 273 hotels.
