The 36th European Film Awards, presented by the European Film Academy to recognize achievements in European filmmaking, took place at Arena Berlin in Berlin on 9 December 2023. It was the twenty-second time that the awards ceremony took place in Germany. [1]

Contents

The full list of nominations was revealed on 7 November 2023. Aki Kaurismäki's Fallen Leaves and Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest led the nominations with five each. [2] Justine Triet's Anatomy of a Fall swept the awards, winning in each of the categories it was nominated for, including European Film, European Director, European Screenwriter and European Actress. [3]

The European Short Film 2023 is presented in co-operation with the following European film festivals. At each of the festivals, a jury appointed by the festival chooses a single candidate. [7]

European University Film Award (EUFA)

The nominees were announced on 5 October 2023. The nominated films will be viewed and discussed in 25 universities in 25 countries and each institution will select its favourite film. In early December, one student representative from each university will attend a three-day deliberation meeting in Hamburg to decide on the overall winner. The winner will then be announced on 7 December, shortly before this year's European Film Awards Ceremony on 9 December in Berlin. [15]

The European Youth Parliament is a politically unbound non-profit organisation, which encourages European youth to actively engage in citizenship and cultural understanding. It annually involves around 25,000 youth from across Europe in its events and has around 6,000 active members in the different countries. It was established in 1987 in Fontainebleau, France.

CENELEC is responsible for European standardization in the area of electrical engineering. Together with ETSI (telecommunications) and CEN, it forms the European system for technical standardization. Europe is often divided into regions and subregions based on geographical, cultural or historical factors. Since there is no universal agreement on Europe's regional composition, the placement of individual countries may vary based on criteria being used. For instance, the Balkans is a distinct geographical region within Europe, but individual countries may alternatively be grouped into South-eastern Europe or Southern Europe.

The European Film Awards have been presented annually since 1988 by the European Film Academy to recognize excellence in European cinematic achievements. The awards are given in 19 categories, of which the most important is the Best Film. They are restricted to European cinema and European producers, directors and actors. The awards were officially also called the "Felix Awards" until 1997, in reference to the former award's trophy statuette, which was replaced by a feminine statuette.

The European Parliament LUX Prize, commonly known as the LUX Prize or LUX Film Prize, was a prize given to a competing film by the European Parliament. Introduced in 2007, the prize is named after the Latin word for "light", lux.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Aniello Desiderio</span> Italian musician (born 1971)

Aniello Desiderio is an Italian virtuoso classical guitarist and teacher, professor at the Conservatorio Domenico Cimarosa in Avellino. He is known for his intricate touch, speed and precision on the instrument, delivering "acrobatic arpeggios and scales of extraordinary brilliance", which has led to comparisons with Paganini. He is particularly renowned for his interpretations of Paganini, Scarlatti, Carulli, and lesser known Italian composers on a world scale.

Angeliki Antoniou is a Greek film director, screenwriter and producer. She studied architecture in Greece and film direction at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. She works as scriptwriter and director in Greece and in Germany. In 2006 she taught film direction at the Film School of University in Thessaloniki. She lives in Athens and Berlin. She has directed feature films and documentaries which have been screened and awarded in prestigious international festivals and distributed world-wide.

The 4th Annual European Film Awards were given out in 1991. The ceremony was organised by the European Film Academy, and took place at the DEFA Studios in Potsdam (Germany). The winners were announced on the 1st of December, with Ken Loach receiving the Felix for European Film of the Year for his feature film Riff-Raff.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">29th European Film Awards</span>

The 29th European Film Awards were presented on 10 December 2016 in Wrocław, Poland. The ceremony is one of a number of events to take place in Wrocław as the city is a 2016 European Capital of Culture, along with San Sebastián. The nominations and winners were selected by more than 2,500 members of the European Film Academy.

The 30th European Film Awards were presented on 9 December 2017 in Berlin, Germany. The nominations and winners are selected by more than 2,500 members of the European Film Academy.

The European University Film Award is one of the awards presented by the European Film Academy, it was first awarded at the 29th European Film Awards in 2016 and is presented and voted by European university students.

The 32nd European Film Awards were presented in Berlin, Germany, on 7 December 2019.

The 33rd European Film Awards was scheduled to be presented in Reykjavík, Iceland on 12 December 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic the awards were announced in a virtual event online.

The 34th European Film Awards were presented in Berlin, Germany on 11 December 2021. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the awards went ahead without an in person audience, taking the form of a hybrid event, including pre-produced and live online.

The 35th European Film Awards, presented by the European Film Academy to recognize achievements in European filmmaking, took place at the Harpa Conference and Concert Hall in Reykjavík, Iceland on 10 December 2022. According to the academy, films eligible for the awards are those that had their first official screening between 1 June 2021 and 31 May 2022 and have a European director.

<i>20,000 Species of Bees</i> 2023 Spanish drama film by Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren

20,000 Species of Bees is a 2023 Spanish drama film written and directed by Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren in her debut feature. It stars Sofía Otero, Patricia López Arnaiz, Ane Gabarain, and Itziar Lazkano. The film narrates the story of Lucía, an eight-year-old transgender girl, who is on a quest for identity. During a summer in a village house linked to beekeeping, she explores her femininity alongside the women of her family, who at the same time reflect on their own.

Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren is a Spanish film director, screenwriter, and producer. She has won awards for Voces de papel (2016), a documentary, and Cuerdas  (2022), a short film, while her first feature film, 20,000 Species of Bees (2023), has won a variety of awards at various film festivals.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Valérie Delpierre</span> Monaco-born film producer

Valérie Delpierre is a Monaco-born film producer whose career has been in and around Spain. She produces films from her company Inicia Films. One of the films she produced took three Gaudí Awards for Best Film in a Non-Catalan Language, best novel Director and best Cinematography for 20,000 Species of Bees in 2024.

The 37th European Film Awards, presented by the European Film Academy to recognize achievements in European filmmaking, will take place at Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern in Lucerne on 7 December 2024. It will be the first time the awards ceremony takes place in Switzerland.
