Ten documentary festivals have suggested one film each, which has had its world premiere at the respective festival's latest edition, to the committee. Chosen in co-operation with the European Documentary Network (EDN), these festivals are: Cinéma du Réel (France), CPH:DOX (Denmark), Doclisboa (Portugal), DOK Leipzig (Germany), IDFA (Netherlands), Ji.hlava (Czech Republic), Krakow Film Festival (Poland), Sheffield Doc/Fest (UK), Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival (Greece) and Visions du Réel (Switzerland). Based on their recommendations and the films individually submitted, the documentary committee, decided on the EFA Documentary Selection.

For the 2019 and 2020 editions of the European Film Awards, the European Film Academy will welcome new festivals to participate in the EFA Short Film selection and awarding procedure. When the annual cycle of participating festivals – running from October of the preceding year to September of the actual awards year – is complete, a committee of short film experts and of EFA Board Members will nominate five of the short film candidates for the award European Short Film. French feminists and film industry professionals, including Rosanna Arquette, Andrea Bescond, Eric Metayer, Amandine Gay, Catherine Zavlav asked for An Officer and a Spy to be taken out of contention for the awards. The nominations were announced just days after actress Valentine Monnier came forward with her story of allegedly being raped by Polanski in 1975 in newspaper Le Parisien , which was corroborated by contemporary witnesses. The group addressed the request to EFA Production director Marion Doring and jury members Nadia Ben Rachid, Vanja Cernjul, Annette Focks, Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh, Gerda Koekoek, Artur Pinheiro, Gisle Tveito and Istvan Vadja. The history of cinema in Poland is almost as long as the history of cinematography, and it has universally recognized achievements, even though Polish films tend to be less commercially available than films from several other European nations.
International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is an annual film festival held at the end of January in various locations in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, focused on independent and experimental films. Patricio Guzmán Lozanes is a Chilean documentary film director, screenwriter, director. He is most known for his film trilogy The Battle of Chile (1975–1979) and more recently for another trilogy; Nostalgia for the Light (2010), The Pearl Button (2015) and The Cordillera of Dreams (2019).
Nalin Kumar Pandya, popularly known as Pan Nalin, is an Indian filmmaker, best known for directing award-winning movies like Samsara (2001), Valley of Flowers (2006), Angry Indian Goddesses (2015) and the semi-autobiographical Chhello Show (2021). His debut feature Samsara (Miramax) was worldwide critical and commercial triumph and went on to win awards like Best First Feature Film at Durban International Film Festival, "Grand Jury Prize – Special Mention" at AFI Fest, Special Jury Award at Santa Barbara International Film Festival and "Most Popular Feature Film" at Melbourne International Film Festival in 2002. Since then Nalin has been actively making fiction and non-fiction movies which have been coproduced with countries like India, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the USA. Nalin's movies have been distributed worldwide.

British director Steve McQueen was presented with the European Achievement in World Cinema Award and filmmaker Agnès Varda was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The 29th European Film Awards were presented on 10 December 2016 in Wrocław, Poland. The ceremony is one of a number of events to take place in Wrocław as the city is a 2016 European Capital of Culture, along with San Sebastián. The nominations and winners were selected by more than 2,500 members of the European Film Academy.
The IFTA Film & Drama Awards took place at the Mansion House on 24 May 2015 in Dublin, honouring Irish film and television released in 2014.
Coproduction Office, founded in 1987, is composed of four production divisions in Berlin, Paris, Copenhagen and London, and an international sales company, all specialised in Auteur Cinema. The Cordillera of Dreams is a 2019 Chilean-French documentary film directed by Patricio Guzmán. It is considered the third installment in a trilogy of films by Guzmán about his native country, Chile, alongside Nostalgia for the Light (2010) and The Pearl Button (2015).
The 35th European Film Awards, presented by the European Film Academy to recognize achievements in European filmmaking, took place at the Harpa Conference and Concert Hall in Reykjavík, Iceland on 10 December 2022. According to the academy, films eligible for the awards are those that had their first official screening between 1 June 2021 and 31 May 2022 and have a European director.
