The 56th annual Venice International Film Festival was held between 1 and 11 September 1999.
Stanley Kubrick's final film Eyes Wide Shut was the festival's opening film. Yugoslavian filmmaker Emir Kusturica was the Jury President for the main competition.
The Golden Lion was awarded to Not One Less directed by Zhang Yimou. [1] [2]

The 57th Cannes Film Festival started on 12 and ran until 23 May 2004. The Palme d'Or went to the American documentary film Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore, becoming the first documentary to win the festival's main prize.

The Story of Qiu Ju is a 1992 Chinese comedy-drama film. The film was directed by Zhang Yimou and, as in many of his films, stars Gong Li in the title role. The screenplay is an adaption of Chen Yuanbin's (陈源斌) novella The Wan Family's Lawsuit (万家诉讼).
Mahamat-Saleh Haroun was born in 1961 in Abéché, Chad. He is a film director from Chad. He left Chad during the civil wars of the 1980s. Haroun is the first Chadian full-length film director. He both writes and directs his films. Though he has lived in France since 1982, most of his films have been set in and made in Chad.

The second prize, the Special Jury Prize was won ex aequo by The Big Animal, a Polish comedy-drama film directed by Jerzy Stuhr, and by Peppermint Candy, a South Korean drama film directed by Lee Chang-dong. Iranian film director, screenwriter, poet, photographer and film producer Abbas Kiarostami was the president of the jury.
