The 81st annual Venice International Film Festival was held from 28 August to 7 September 2024, at Venice Lido in Italy. Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opened the festival on 28 August 2024, [1] while Pupi Avati's The American Backyard closed on 7 September 2024. [2]
French actress Isabelle Huppert served as Jury President for the main competition. [3] Italian actress and model Sveva Alviti hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. [4] Pedro Almodóvar's The Room Next Door was awarded with the Golden Lion. [5]
Australian filmmaker Peter Weir and American actress Sigourney Weaver received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement during the festival. [6] [7]

Venice Classics is the section that since 2012 has presented world premiere screenings at the Venice Film Festival of restorations of film classics carried out over the past year by film archives, cultural institutions and production companies around the world. The section usually also presents a selection of documentaries about cinema. Director and screenwriter Renato De Maria will chair the Jury of Film Students which – for the eleventh year – will award the Venice Classics prizes for the respective competitions for Best Restored Film and for the Best Documentary About Cinema. The Venice Film Festival or Venice International Film Festival is an annual film festival held in Venice, Italy. It is the world's oldest film festival and one of the "Big Five" International film festivals worldwide, which include the Big Three European Film Festivals, alongside the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada and the Sundance Film Festival in the United States. These festivals are internationally renowned for giving creators the artistic freedom to express themselves through film. In 1951, FIAPF formally accredited the festival.

American film director William Friedkin was presented with a lifetime achievement award. Italian film director Bernardo Bertolucci was the president of the jury. He was previously the president of the jury at the 40th edition in 1983. Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, was the opening film of the festival. Italian actress Eva Riccobono hosted the opening and closing nights of the festival.
The 71st annual Venice International Film Festival took place in Venice, Italy between 27 August to 6 September 2014. The festival opened with Alejandro G. Iñárritu's film Birdman, and closed with Ann Hui's drama film The Golden Era. Italian actress Luisa Ranieri hosted the opening and closing nights of the festival. The Swedish film A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence, directed by Roy Andersson, won the Golden Lion, and Joshua Oppenheimer's The Look of Silence won the Grand Jury Prize.
