Background and composition

"A.I." was written by band members Ryan Tedder and Brent Kutzle as well as Peter Gabriel and Steve Wilmot. It was produced by Tedder, Kutzle, and Wilmot. The song draws inspiration from the 2001 film A.I. Artificial Intelligence. [2] The lyrics describe a person's desire for an artificial love rather than a real one. The song uses a wonky synth to travel through the choruses and instrumental breaks. The outro is sung by Gabriel with a much darker and haunting tone.
