Early life

He was born in Madikeri (Kodagu district, Karnataka) [5] into the Kodava community. [6] [7] He played hockey for his school, St. Michael's Madikeri, as a fourteen year old. [7] He was a product of Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel, Bangalore. [7]

Career

Subbaiah has participated in the Commonwealth games. [4] He was part of the 1998 gold-winning Asian Games Indian team. He is a recipient of the Arjuna Award. [8] Between 1988 and 1998, he took part in 285 international matches. [7] [5] [9] [10] [11] [12] He represented and captained the Indian hockey team between the years 1987 and 2007. [7]

Awards

Subbaiah was conferred with an honorary doctorate from the Mangalore University by Hans Raj Bhardwaj, Governor of Karnataka. [5]

Retirement

He is a commentator, coach, manager, administrator, umpire and selector as well. [5] He was part of the Hockey India disciplinary panel as well. [13] A B Subbaiah is also part of the 13-member Hockey India committee. [14] [15] He is the Hockey Karnataka secretary since 2018. [16]

The Kodava people or Kodavas or Codavas are an ethno-linguistic group from the region of Kodagu in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, who natively speak the Kodava language. They are traditionally land-owning agriculturists and patrilineal, with martial customs. Kodavas worship ancestors and weapons. They used to worship swords, bows, arrows and later guns. Hence, Kodavas are the only ones in India permitted to carry firearms without a license.

The town of Virajpet also spelled as Virajapete is town of the district of Kodagu, in India's southern State of Karnataka. It is the main town of the Virajpet taluka, south of the district, and borders Kerala State. The name of the town is derived from its founder, Dodda Vira Rajendra.

The clan of Kodavas in the Indian state of Karnataka have a long history of association with the game of field hockey. The district of Kodagu which is the land of the Kodavas is considered as the cradle of Indian hockey. More than 50 Kodavas have represented India in international hockey tournaments, out of which 7 have also participated in Olympics. B P Govinda, M P Ganesh, M M Somaiya, C S Poonacha are some of the prominent Kodavas who have represented India. The passion for hockey in Kodagu is so much that more than 200 families participate in an annual hockey festival. This festival is recognised as one of the largest field hockey tournaments in the world and has been referred to the Guinness Book of Records. However it has already found a mention in the Limca Book of Records, which is an Indian variant of the Guinness Book.

V. S. Ugrappa is an Indian politician and former member of parliament from Bellary constituency in Karnataka. He lost in the 2019 Indian general election to Devendrappa. A member of the Indian National Congress, he was elected in a bypoll in November 2018. He defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate J. Shantha by 2.1 lakh votes.
