Independent Power Transmission Operator S.A. (IPTO or ADMIE from "ΑΔΜΗΕ" - Ανεξάρτητος Διαχειριστής Μεταφοράς Ηλεκτρικής Ενέργειας A.E. in Greek) is the Transmission System Operator for the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System. The mission of the company is the operation, control, maintenance and development of the national transmission system of Greece to ensure the reliable and efficient electricity supply, as well as the operation of the electricity market following the principles of transparency and equality.

Since February 2012 it is independent in operation and management, retaining the necessary independence required for compliance with 2009/72/EC EU Directive. [1] Till the end of June 2017 it was a wholly owned subsidiary of Public Power Corporation of Greece (PPC S.A.). As of June 20, 2017 ADMIE follows the model of proprietary separated Administrator (Ownership Unbundling) and is fully harmonized with the Directive 2009/72/EC.

The current shareholder structure of ADMIE is as follows: 51% ADMIE HOLDINGS Inc., 25% DES ADMIE S.A., 24% State Grid Europe Limited.[ citation needed ] [2]

Until 31 January 2012, ADMIE was a joint company with the Hellenic Electricity Market Operator S.A. (now called LAGIE) under the name "Hellenic Transmission System Operator S.A.". [3]

ADMIE's compliance with the requirements applicable to the model of the Independent Transmission Operator was certified by the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) in December 2012.

ADMIE S.A. is a member of ENTSO-E (the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity). [4]

In summer 2022 analysts said that if Russian gas was completely stopped ADMIE would struggle to cope. [5]

Privatization

The Greek Bailout Agreement in July 2015 includes the privatization of ADMIE. [6]

For this purpose, ADMIE is to be split from PPC S.A., with a 51% stake to be transferred to the Greek State and a 49% stake to be sold, including a stake of at least 29% to be offered to strategic Investors. [7]

On 21 October 2016, a consortium formed by Terna S.p.A. and F2i SGR S.p.A. (both with 50% stakes) submitted a binding offer for the acquisition of a 24% stake in ADMIE. [8] Finally, the 24% of the company was sold to the State Grid Corporation of China. [9]

Ukrainian Ukrenergo became the 40th member of the association on 1 January 2024.

Fingrid Oyj is a Finnish national electricity transmission grid operator. It is owned by the Finnish state (53.1%) and various financial and insurance institutions (46.9%).

The synchronous grid of Continental Europe is the largest synchronous electrical grid in the world. It is interconnected as a single phase-locked 50 Hz mains frequency electricity grid that supplies over 400 million customers in 24 countries, including most of the European Union. In 2009, 667 GW of production capacity was connected to the grid, providing approximately 80 GW of operating reserve margin. Energinet is the Danish national transmission system operator for electricity and natural gas. It is an independent public enterprise owned by the Danish state under the Ministry of Climate and Energy. Energinet has some 1150 employees, and its headquarters are located in Erritsø near Fredericia in Jutland. The gas division is located in Ballerup near Copenhagen.

Terna S.p.A. is a transmission system operator (TSO) based in Rome, Italy. It operates through Terna Rete Italia, that manages the Italian transmission grid and Terna Plus which is in charge of new business opportunities and non-traditional activities in Brazil, Chile, Peru and USA (2022). With 74,910 kilometres (46,550 mi) of power lines or around 98% of the Italian high-voltage power transmission grid, Terna is the sixth largest electricity transmission grid operator in the world based on the size of its electrical grid. Terna is listed on the Borsa Italiana and is a constituent of the FTSE MIB index.

The IPS/UPS is a wide area synchronous transmission grid of some CIS countries, with a common mode of operation and centralized supervisory control. It has an installed generation capacity of 300 gigawatts, and produces 1,200 terawatt-hours (TWh) per year for its 280 million customers. The system spans eight time zones.

The European Regulators' Group for Electricity and Gas (ERGEG) was an advisory group to the European Commission on internal energy market issues in Europe. ERGEG was set up by the European Commission to assist the commission in consolidating a single EU market for electricity and gas. ERGEG's members were the heads of the national energy regulatory authorities in the EU's 28 Member States. It was dissolved in 2011 when Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) took over its responsibilities.

Hellenic Electricity Market Operator S.A. is responsible for the operation and settlement of the energy market in Greece as well as daily energy scheduling.

GEK Terna Holding Real Estate Construction (Greek: ΓΕΚ ΤΕΡΝΑ) is a large Greek conglomerate which is listed on the Athens Exchange. Its construction branch Terna is one of the leading enterprises of its sector in Greece.

Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation is the transmission system operator for electricity in Turkey. It is a government-owned corporation. It is planned for a minority stake to be sold to the private sector before the end of 2022. It reportedly does not co-ordinate with EMRA re YEKA bids as of 2023.

Ukrenergo is an electricity transmission system operator in Ukraine and the sole operator of the country's high-voltage transmission lines. It is 100% owned by Ukrainian government.
