Independent Power Transmission Operator S.A. (IPTO or ADMIE from "ΑΔΜΗΕ" - Ανεξάρτητος Διαχειριστής Μεταφοράς Ηλεκτρικής Ενέργειας A.E. in Greek) is the Transmission System Operator for the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System. The mission of the company is the operation, control, maintenance and development of the national transmission system of Greece to ensure the reliable and efficient electricity supply, as well as the operation of the electricity market following the principles of transparency and equality.
Since February 2012 it is independent in operation and management, retaining the necessary independence required for compliance with 2009/72/EC EU Directive. [1] Till the end of June 2017 it was a wholly owned subsidiary of Public Power Corporation of Greece (PPC S.A.). As of June 20, 2017 ADMIE follows the model of proprietary separated Administrator (Ownership Unbundling) and is fully harmonized with the Directive 2009/72/EC.
The current shareholder structure of ADMIE is as follows: 51% ADMIE HOLDINGS Inc., 25% DES ADMIE S.A., 24% State Grid Europe Limited.[ citation needed ] [2]
Until 31 January 2012, ADMIE was a joint company with the Hellenic Electricity Market Operator S.A. (now called LAGIE) under the name "Hellenic Transmission System Operator S.A.". [3]
ADMIE's compliance with the requirements applicable to the model of the Independent Transmission Operator was certified by the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) in December 2012.
ADMIE S.A. is a member of ENTSO-E (the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity). [4]
In summer 2022 analysts said that if Russian gas was completely stopped ADMIE would struggle to cope. [5]
The Greek Bailout Agreement in July 2015 includes the privatization of ADMIE. [6]
For this purpose, ADMIE is to be split from PPC S.A., with a 51% stake to be transferred to the Greek State and a 49% stake to be sold, including a stake of at least 29% to be offered to strategic Investors. [7]
On 21 October 2016, a consortium formed by Terna S.p.A. and F2i SGR S.p.A. (both with 50% stakes) submitted a binding offer for the acquisition of a 24% stake in ADMIE. [8] Finally, the 24% of the company was sold to the State Grid Corporation of China. [9]
The Public Power Corporation S.A. is the largest electric power company in Greece. PPC acquired Enel Romania from the Italian Enel group for €1.24 billion on October 25, 2023.

A transmission system operator (TSO) is an entity entrusted with transporting energy in the form of natural gas or electrical power on a national or regional level, using fixed infrastructure. The term is defined by the European Commission. The certification procedure for transmission system operators is listed in Article 10 of the Electricity and Gas Directives of 2009.
ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators, represents 40 electricity transmission system operators (TSOs) from 36 countries across Europe, thus extending beyond EU borders. ENTSO-E was established and given legal mandates by the EU's Third Package for the Internal energy market in 2009, which aims at further liberalising the gas and electricity markets in the EU. Ukrainian Ukrenergo became the 40th member of the association on 1 January 2024.

The synchronous grid of Continental Europe is the largest synchronous electrical grid in the world. It is interconnected as a single phase-locked 50 Hz mains frequency electricity grid that supplies over 400 million customers in 24 countries, including most of the European Union. It is an independent public enterprise owned by the Danish state under the Ministry of Climate and Energy. Energinet has some 1150 employees, and its headquarters are located in Erritsø near Fredericia in Jutland. The gas division is located in Ballerup near Copenhagen.
Terna S.p.A. is a transmission system operator (TSO) based in Rome, Italy. It operates through Terna Rete Italia, that manages the Italian transmission grid and Terna Plus which is in charge of new business opportunities and non-traditional activities in Brazil, Chile, Peru and USA (2022). With 74,910 kilometres (46,550 mi) of power lines or around 98% of the Italian high-voltage power transmission grid, Terna is the sixth largest electricity transmission grid operator in the world based on the size of its electrical grid. Terna is listed on the Borsa Italiana and is a constituent of the FTSE MIB index.
The IPS/UPS is a wide area synchronous transmission grid of some CIS countries, with a common mode of operation and centralized supervisory control. It has an installed generation capacity of 300 gigawatts, and produces 1,200 terawatt-hours (TWh) per year for its 280 million customers. The system spans eight time zones.
The European Regulators' Group for Electricity and Gas (ERGEG) was an advisory group to the European Commission on internal energy market issues in Europe. ERGEG was set up by the European Commission to assist the commission in consolidating a single EU market for electricity and gas. ERGEG's members were the heads of the national energy regulatory authorities in the EU's 28 Member States. It was dissolved in 2011 when Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) took over its responsibilities.

50Hertz Transmission GmbH, formerly named Vattenfall Europe Transmission, is one of four transmission system operators for electricity in Germany, and is wholly owned by Eurogrid GmbH, indirectly owned and managed by the Belgian transmission system operator Elia System Operator and Australian-based IFM Investors. The company is a member of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E).
Energy in Greece is dominated by fossil gas and oil. Electricity generation is dominated by the one third state owned Public Power Corporation. In 2009 DEI supplied for 85.6% of all electric energy demand in Greece, while the number fell to 77.3% in 2010. Almost half (48%) of DEI's power output in 2010 was generated using lignite. 12% of Greece's electricity comes from hydroelectric power plants and another 20% from natural gas. Between 2009 and 2010, independent companies' energy production increased by 56%, from 2,709 Gigawatt hour in 2009 to 4,232 GWh in 2010.
The Great Sea Interconnector, formerly known as the EuroAsia Interconnector is a planned HVDC interconnector between the Greek, Cypriot, and Israeli power grids via the world's longest submarine power cable, with a length of 310 kilometres (190 mi) from Israel to Cyprus and 898 kilometres (558 mi) from Cyprus to Greece for a total of 1,208 kilometres (751 mi).
The Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (Greek: Διαχειριστής Ελληνικού Δικτύου Διανομής Ηλεκτρικής Ενέργειας, or ΔΕΔΔΗΕ was formed by the separation of the Distribution Department of Greece's Public Power Corporation in order to comply with the 2009/72/EC EU Directive relative to the electricity market organization. The mission of this company is to undertake the tasks of the Distribution Network Operator of Greece.

Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation is the transmission system operator for electricity in Turkey. It is a government-owned corporation. It is planned for a minority stake to be sold to the private sector before the end of 2022. It reportedly does not co-ordinate with EMRA re YEKA bids as of 2023.
Ukrenergo is an electricity transmission system operator in Ukraine and the sole operator of the country's high-voltage transmission lines. It is 100% owned by Ukrainian government.
