Associação Sportivo Guineenses, abbreviation: ASGUI is a football club that plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde and currently plays in the Sal Premier Division. It is based in Santa Maria, Cape Verde in the south of the island of Sal. The club plays at Estádio Municipal northwest of the center and also at Estádio Marcelo Leitão north in Espargos. The level is a beginner club.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

The Sal Premier Division is a regional championship played in Sal Island, Cape Verde. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. The competition are organized by the Sal Regional Football Association. The Premier Divisions contains eight clubs. In title history, Académico do Aeroporto has the most number of titles numbering 14, and is ranked fifth in the most number of championship titles of any of the island leagues in Cape Verde. The champion promotes into the Cape Verdean Football Championships each season while the last placed club relegates into the second division the following season.

Santa Maria is a city in the southern part of the island municipality of Sal, Cape Verde. It is located on the south coast, about 16 km south of the Amílcar Cabral International Airport, and 20 km south of the island capital Espargos.

History

ASGUI are one of the seven newest clubs in the Sal Island League. In mid-2014, along with the other five the club became registered and played their first match in the regional Opening Tournament later in the year and later the regional Second Division in 2015. ASGUI finished second place behind Florença for the 2015 season in the spring and qualified to the Premier Division for the first time as its eighth participant. ASGUI won their first Premier Division match over Verdun 4-3 on February 6. Its successes were moderate, they made their second win over Juventude 1-5 on February 28 and became their highest scoring match of the club, ASGUI made their final win over Florença 1-3 at the 6th round. ASGUI's positions were slumping as their remaining matches ended in losses, their worst was a 1-6 loss to Palmeira on March 27. ASGUI finished last with 9 points and had a total of 11 losses, the club also conceded 42 goals and returned to the Second Division for the following season. ASGUI played for only a season in that division, ASGUI did good and had only 4 wins and draws, their highest result of the season was a 3-2 win over Chã de Matias on April 28. ASGUI finished first in the Second Division with 16 points, three more than Pretória, whose last match of the season that ASGUI played with, the newcomer. ASGUI got their only Second Division title and participated for the second time in the island's Premier Division in the following season.

Sport Club Verdun is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. The team is based in the village of Pedra de Lume in the east of the island of Sal, though they play in Espargos' stadium, the home field which is made up of dirt is rarely used for practices. Its current chairman is Alcindo Conceição Silva and its current manager is Domingo Gomes who replaced Djulhiano Santos which he now manages Juventude.

FC Juventude (Sal)

Futebol Clube Juventude is a football (soccer) club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the subdivision of Morro de Cural in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal. Juventude is the fifth successful football (soccer) club on the island, having won 7 official regional titles. As of the 2016-17 season, its chairman is David Brito and its coach is Djulhiano Santos.

ASGUI withdrew and did not participate in the 2017-18 island's cup competitions likely due to material reasons, ASGUI now has the third least cup appearances in Sal. ASGUI started off the 2017-18 season worst and remained last place and remains midway in the Premier Division at the 7th round, they made their first ever draw, with Académica do Sal on January 28. ASGUI remains to be in the relegation zone, though they had six goals scored, the worst they conceded 19 goals, the worst in the Premier Division alongside Gaviões. At round 9, they had 8 goals scored and still last with two points, the worst they conceded 24 goals, the worst in the Premier Division. They lost 2-5 to Palmeira Santa Maria and had 12 goals scored and 30 conceded, they also had 5 points shared with Gaviões but ASGUI is surprisingly outside the relegation zone. They remain outside as they made 1-0 over Gaviões and pushed a position higher and has 8 points. ASGUI conceded 30 goals, the worst on the island. ASGUI lost to Juventude 3-2, Académica Sal and Gaviões's losses made ASGUI kept outside the relegation zone as they remained three above. Their goal concessions became second worst ahead of Gaviões. ASGUI finished with eight points, they scored 15 goals, they finished seventh with more goals scored than Gaviões, next season, they will have their second straight appearance in the Second Division. ASGUI, with two appearances in the top regional competition became Sal's eighth prominent club behind Verdun Pedra de Lume and Florença. ASGUI's goal average dropped from 1.719 last season to 1.522 and overall wins dropped from 37% to 34.78%.

Académica do Sal association football club

Associação Académica do Sal is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal and its location is on Palmeira Road next to the city library. It is one of many teams that only won one title since independence. Its current proprietor is Mário Ramos.

GD Palmeira

Grupo Desportivo Palmeira is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Santa Maria and plays in its municipal stadium north of the town center. Palmeira is the fourth successful football (soccer) club on the island, having won 8 official regional titles.

The club plays at both at Santa Maria's municipal stadium and at Estádio Marcelo Leitão, a multi-use stadium in Espargos, Cape Verde. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 8,000. The stadium has seat rows in the east side and is east-southeast of the city center and Monte Curral. The stadium is home to the two best football clubs on the island, the other being Académica do Sal, other clubs based in Espargos includes Juventude which is based in Morro Curral and the stadium is being located inside the neighborhood. Other clubs based in Espargos but a neighborhood includes the newly established clubs of GDRC Pretória and Chã de Matias. Clubs playing the stadium but based on other parts of the island include Santa Maria, Florença de Santa Maria, SC Verdun Pedra de Lume and Palmeira de Santa Maria.

At the end of the 2016-17 season, ASGUI has 32 matches played at the regional championships, and has a total of 11 wins, 5 draws and 14 losses (9 wins, 4 draws and a loss in the Second Division) and has scored a total of 55 goals, it equals to 55 goals that ASGUI conceded, ASGUI scored more in the Second Division with 38 goals scored and the club conceded fewer in the Second Division with only 13. ASGUI has a total of 44 points, of which 35 were in the Second Division.
