Grupo Desportivo Florença (Capeverdean Crioulos of ALUPEC or ALUPEK: Grupu Disportibu Florensa) is a football club that plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Santa Maria in the southern part of the island of Sal and plays in its municipal stadium north of the town center and at Estádio Marcelo Leitão. The level started as a beginner club in their first season in 2014 and has now become the seventh most powerful club on the island.

The Alfabeto Unificado para a Escrita do Caboverdiano, commonly known as ALUPEC, is the alphabet that was officially recognized by the Cape Verdean government to write Cape Verdean Creole.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

Santa Maria is a city in the southern part of the island municipality of Sal, Cape Verde. It is located on the south coast, about 16 km south of the Amílcar Cabral International Airport, and 20 km south of the island capital Espargos.

History

The club was founded in mid 1995. In its first years of competition, they played with lesser clubs mainly from the island including ASGUI, Gaviões and Jovens Unidos.

Florença became a registered club in 2014, at the time was one of the six newest clubs in the Sal Island League. They played their first match in the regional Opening Tournament in late 2014 and later the regional Second Division in 2015. Along with ASGUI, they became the next two clubs to compete in the regional Premier Division as the club finished first.

Florença played with its second Association Cup season that was the last that contained only a division and had 11 rounds where they met every club in the association. Later, Florença and ASGUI became the two of the seventh clubs top participate at the second tier competitions in Sal. Their first Premier Division match was their first with Juventude of Morro Curral played on February 7, 2015 which ended in a scoreless draw. The club finished sixth and became the seventh club to spend their second season in the second tier competition, they had 17 points five wins and scored 16 goals, the club had only a win at home the highest goals scored over a club was over ASGUI with four goals. Their match average was 1.547. The club lost to Académico Aeroporto on April 9, 2016 and was their worst defeat for a year.

Florença played their 25th championship match on January 14, the start of the 2017 season, the club challenged the city's main club SC Santa Maria and lost 2-3 to that club. At the time, the club never lost to Juventude and Santa Maria. Their position ranged from low to moderate, they started 6th and finished 5th with 18 points and scored 14 goals, Florença conceded 23 goals, ahead of Verdun and Gaviões. Florença's worst defeat became worser, first a 0-4 loss to Académico do Aeroporto on April 23, then a 5-0 loss to Juventude on April 30 and became the club's worst match to date. In March 2017, the club headed straight to the regional cup semis for the first time and lost the match in mid-March, it was their greatest success at the regional cup competitions as a semifinalist. Its goal average per match was 1.342, As of the 2017 season, it had 51 goals scored, of which two thirds were scored away and a third at home, the home and away draws were even at four, it also had ten home losses over seven away losses.

At the 2017-18 regional cup, they played for only a round as they lost to Jovens Unidos on November 25. On December 3, Florença Santa Maria started off the 2017-18 season with a loss to Santa Maria, the city's main club, another loss was made afterwards to Académico do Aeroporto before two straight wins were made over ASGUI and Gaviões. On January 21, the 6th round, they defeated one of the historically top three remaining clubs of the Premier Division, Académica do Sal, which was rare to the club to do, currently the club at the 7th round was in a moderate position and had 9 points. Florença Santa Maria made their huge 2-5 win over Gaviões recently at the 11th round and is fifth with 15 points. Florença underwent three straight wins with their recent over Académica Sal and was fifth place with 21 points (a position they would later finish), 13 more than sixth placed ASGUI's and scored 14 goals. At round 12, its goals were shared alongside ASGUI's, what was shared is their wins with Académico do Aeroporto. Florença's final match of the season was a 1-3 loss to Palmeira. Fifth place was their successful position for the club. Also Florenca now has 16 consecutive matches without a draw. With three seasons at the top regional competition, the club became the seventh most powerful club behind Verdun Pedra de Lume. One of the steady growth of strength was their goal average per match grew very tiny to 1.365 and its overall wins from 42% to more than 44%.

So far as of April 2, 2018, the club has played 52 matches and has a grand total of 76 points, 23 wins, 7 draws and 22 losses, it also has 66 goals scored.

The club's stadium is Estádio Municipal de Santa Maria, the club trains partly at the stadium. Its matches are played at Estádio Marcelo Leitão, a multi-use stadium in Espargos, Cape Verde. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 8,000. The stadium has seat rows in the east side and is east-southeast of the city center and Monte Curral. The stadium is home to the two best football clubs on the island, the other being Académica do Sal, other clubs based in Espargos includes Juventude which is based in Morro Curral and the stadium is being located inside the neighborhood. Other clubs based in Espargos but a neighborhood includes the newly established clubs of Gaviões, Chã de Matias and GDRC Pretória.. Clubs playing the stadium but based on other parts of the island include Santa Maria, SC Verdun Pedra de Lume, Palmeira de Santa Maria and ASGUI.
