Grupo Desportivo Recreativo e Cultural Pretória (short forms: GDRC Pretória and GDRCP) is a sports club based in the neighborhood of Pretória in the east of Espargos on the island of Sal, Cape Verde. Sporting clubs include football (soccer), basketball and minibasketball. [1] Until late 2016, Pretória's football club was unregistered and did not form one of the twelve registered clubs on the island. In late 2016, it became a registered club of the Sal Regional Football Association. Pretória are one of the four clubs who only competed in the Second Division.

Sal is an island in Cape Verde. It belongs to the northern group of islands, called Barlavento ("windwards"), and comprises a single administrative division, the municipality of Sal. Its seat is the city of Espargos.

The Sal Regional Football Association is a football (soccer) association covering the island of Sal. It is headquartered in the city of Espargos, the island capital.

Its logo color are red and black.

History

The sports club was founded on September 19, 1991 and its creation was written on paper on a sporting, social, recreative and cultural area on the island of Sal. GDRC Pretória celebrated its 10th year of foundation in 2001 and 25th year of foundation in 2016.

In 2014, when six new football clubs participated in the Sal Island League, Pretória was not one of them and remained to be unregistered until late 2016, Pretória became the thirteenth club in Sal to participate. In football, the club participated in the regional Second Division and played their first match at the Second Round on March 31, 2017 and lost to Nova Geração 2-0 which is the club's only loss, they were first place in the division, a few weeks later, the club became second, a position that would finish in the division behind ASGUI and failing to qualify into the Premier Division. [2] Pretória were one of the four clubs who competed in the Second Division until September 2017 when Oásis Atlântico made it 5.

Pretòria started the 2017-18 season in their first ever Opening Tournament in the Second Division on November 10, they played in Group B which they made a goal draw with Nova Geração. Pretória was the number one club in Group B and advanced to the finals where they would lose to SC Verdun, a club once played in the Premier Division. Pretória they made their first appearance in the Sal Cup on November 18, it ended in a goal draw with Chã de Matias, they won 4-2 in the penalty shootout later and advanced to the second round where they lost 2-1 to Juventude on January 6, the following year. Pretória was to begin with their first of two meetings with SC Verdun, no police were at Marcelo Leitão. Their first match was a second round match which ended in a 2-1 victory over Nova Geração. Pretória suffered two straight losses. On February 3, the rescheduled first round match played which Pretória would lose to Verdun 2-1 and made it their first ever home loss. Pretória underwent a two match winning streak followed by two straight draws before a loss to Oásis Atlântico. Their final match of the season was a 3-4 win over JURF and finished third place, that became their worst position for the club.

Estádio Marcelo Leitão is a multi-use stadium in Espargos, Cape Verde. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 8,000. The stadium has seat rows in the east side and is east-southeast of the city center and Monte Curral. The stadium is home to the two best football clubs on the island, the other being Académica do Sal, other clubs based in Espargos includes Juventude which is based in Morro Curral and the stadium is being located inside the neighborhood. Other clubs based in Espargos but a neighborhood includes the recently added clubs of Gaviões and Chã de Matias . Clubs playing the stadium but based on other parts of the island include Santa Maria, SC Verdun Pedra de Lume, Palmeira de Santa Maria and ASGUI, Florença.

The club trains both at the stadium and at Patina in the north (being the main home field for the club).

The basketball team was founded on September 19, 1991 and participates in the Sal Basketball Championships. The team is a member of the Sal Regional Basketball Association (Associação Regioinal do Basquetebol (or Basquete) do Sal, ARBS).

The team became a registered basketball team on August 28, 2008 and is written on an official publication. [3]

Arena

The team plays in Polidesportivo Municipal do Sal, the same arena as another basketball club Académico do Aeroporto also plays. The arena is located south of the city center and SSW of the foot of Monte Curral.

Minibasketball

A mini-basketball club named Pretorinhas exists, one of the projects with huge pedagogic and social value created by the association, essential for the sustainability of youth and junior classes and fundamentally important on the development of taste and pleasure for the sport, learning to play and those who learned how to play.
