Abracadabra is the 22nd studio album by the Japanese rock band Buck-Tick, released on September 21, 2020 by the label Lingua Sounda, subdivision of Victor Entertainment [1] [2] and November 20, 2020 internationally by JPU Records. It was released in two editions in Japan: regular and limited in three formats: CD + Blu-ray, cassette and vinyl. [3] Internationally it was released on CD and cassette with bonus tracks.

Background

The name "Abracadabra", taken from the lyrics of the song "Eureka", was chosen by lead guitarist and songwriter Hisashi Imai. [4] In an interview with BARKS, Imai says they started composing the album in the middle of spring 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the recordings were suspended for a month. [5]

Abracadabra was directed by Junichi Tanaka [6] and the covers were produced by Kazunori Akita. [7]

The album features three new recordings of previously released songs. "Kemonotachi no Yoru" had previously been released as a double A-side single alongside the non-album song "Rondo" a year prior, and "Datenshi" had been released as a single earlier the same year. Both songs appear in new remixed arrangements performed by frequent Buck-Tick collaborator YOW-ROW of the band Gari. "Kogoeru" had been released one month earlier as the B-side to the "Moonlight Escape" single and appears on the album in a new remixed form courtesy of their longtime collaborator Cube Juice. [8]

Following the album's release in Japan it was announced that the band had partnered with London-based label JPU Records to release an international special edition of Abracadabra, marking the first time in the band's history that one of their albums was officially distributed outside of Asia. [9] [10] The international edition comes with a new cover design and 4 bonus tracks. Initially announced with a November 2020 release date, it was eventually pushed to February 2021 due to production delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tour

Due to the pandemic, the album promotion shows with audience became impracticable. Buck-Tick performed the online concert "ABRACADABRA LIVE ON THE NET" on September 21. [11]

Chart performance

Abracadabra peaked at the third position on the Oricon Albums Chart [12] and sold about 15,902 copies in its first week. [13] It peaked at 5th place on Billboard Japan. [14]

Darker Than Darkness -Style 93- was digitally remastered and re-released on September 19, 2002, with two bonus tracks. It was remastered and re-released again on September 5, 2007. "Dress" was remixed and used as the opening theme for the anime Trinity Blood (2005), this version was also released as a single. The album was named one of the top albums from 1989−1998 in a 2004 issue of the music magazine Band Yarouze.

Tenshi no Revolver is the fifteenth studio album by Japanese rock band Buck-Tick, released by BMG Japan on September 19, 2007. The group deliberately focused on melody and adopted a straight rock "band sound" for the album. Hisashi Imai is a Japanese musician and songwriter. He is best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Buck-Tick since 1983. Mary's Blood was a Japanese all-female heavy metal band from Tokyo, formed in 2009 by four former members of Destrose. After releasing three EPs as an independent band, they signed to Nippon Columbia for their first album, Countdown to Evolution (2014). Mary's Blood then switched to Victor Entertainment for the release of Bloody Palace (2015) and Fate (2016). Mary's Blood began an indefinite hiatus on April 9, 2022.

"Kemonotachi no Yoru/RONDO" (獣たちの夜/RONDO) is the 38th single by the Japanese rock band Buck-Tick, released on May 22, 2019 on the label Lingua Sounda. The song "Rondo" is used as the ending theme for the GeGeGe no Kitaro anime since episode 50. Cube Juice, the project of the music producer Nagao Shinichi, participates in track 3 with Kemonotachi no Yoru's remix. The track Kemonotachi no Yoru, in a different version, is part of the album Abracadabra.

<i>Izora</i> (album) 2023 studio album by Buck-Tick

Izora is the twenty-third studio album by the Japanese rock band Buck-Tick. It was released on April 12, 2023. The album peaked at the 2nd position on the Oricon Albums Chart and is band's first Top 3 album on Billboard Japan Hot Albums chart. Its charting success makes it a rare example for such a long-lasting band and their "will and persistence" on the Japanese music scene. It is the last album featuring lead singer Atsushi Sakurai, who died on October 19, 2023.
