He was the inaugural M-1 Global Light Heavyweight World Champion, and also holds a highly-decorated background in judo and Combat Sambo. He is a six-time World Combat Sambo Champion.

A professional competitor since 2010, Makhachev was the combat sambo world champion at 74 kilograms in 2016. As of 7 March 2023, he is #3 in the UFC men's pound-for-pound rankings.

The European Sambo Championships is the main sambo championships in Europe, organized by the European Sambo Federation. The first championship was held in 1972 in Riga. Ukraine plans to boycott the 2022 European Sambo Championships because Russian and Belarusian athletes will be allowed to compete with neutral status. Unlike most international federations, the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) has not banned Russian and Belarusians in response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Abubakar Magomedovich Nurmagomedov is a Russian mixed martial artist, who is currently competing in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is a three-time Combat Sambo World Championship bronze medalist and Russian national combat sambo champion.

Svetlana Alekseevna Galante is a Russian judoka and a sambo practitioner. She is considered to be one of the greatest practitioners of Sambo and is a member of the FIAS Hall of fame.

Yaroslav Amosov is a Ukrainian mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the Welterweight division of Bellator MMA, where he is the current Bellator Welterweight Champion. As of February 28, 2023, he is #3 in the Bellator men's pound-for-pound rankings.

The 2019 European Sambo Championships is an edition of the European Sambo Championships, organized by the European Sambo Federation. It was held in Gijón, Spain from 17 to 19 May 2019.

The 2017 African Sambo Championships were held in Victoria, Seychelles from 11 to 15 May 2017.
