The Men's FIH Hockey World Cup is an international field hockey competition organised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The tournament was started in 1971. It is held every four years, bridging the four years between the Summer Olympics. Pakistan is the most successful team, having won the tournament four times. Australia competes internationally in indoor hockey, with the Australian women’s indoor team undertaking a tour annually. Every four years, Australia competes in the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup. The Australian national indoor team is nominated and selected from the indoor Australian Championships.

The 2017 Men's African Hockey Indoor Cup of Nations was held in Swakopmund, Namibia from 23–25 June 2017. The competition featured three teams, an increase from 2013 as Zimbabwe featured for the first time ever. South Africa defeated Namibia in the final and secured a place in the 2018 Men's Indoor Hockey World Cup.

The Women's Pan American Cup is a women's international field hockey tournament organized by the Pan American Hockey Federation. The winning team becomes the champion of the Americas and qualifies for the FIH Hockey World Cup.

The 2022 Women's Indoor Hockey World Cup would have been the sixth edition of this tournament and scheduled to be played from 3 to 7 February 2021 in Liège, Belgium. It was originally scheduled for February 2021, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
