Agum Gumelar (born 17 December 1945) is a politician and former general of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. He is a former minister having held several positions,a former chairman of Indonesian Football Association and National Sports Committee of Indonesia. He is an alumnus of the National Military Academy in Magelang,Central Java and Medical Faculty of Padjadjaran University in Bandung,West Java. In 1998,he received a master's degree from Indonesian Global Management Institute ,a diploma mill that was banned in 2005. [1]
Agum is married to Linda Amaliasari and has 2 children,Haris Khaseli Gumelar and Ami Dianti Gumelar.
Agum entered the Indonesian Military Academy in Magelang,Central Java in 1969. In 1973,he was appointed as staff in the Operational Command for the Restoration of Security and Order.
In late 1987,Agum was promoted to Vice Intelligence Assistance of Special Force Command until 1990. In 1991,he was transferred to Vice Intelligence of Jakarta military area command. In 1992 Agum was promoted to Chief of Danrem 042/Garuda Hitam at Lampung.
In 1993,he was promoted as Director A of the Strategic Intelligence Board of Indonesian National Armed Forces and also promoted to Chief of Special Force Command. In 1994,he was promoted to the position of Chief of Staff of the Bukit Barisan Military Area Command until 1996 when he was again transferred and promoted as Chief of the Wirabuana Military Area Command until 1998.
By 1998 he was promoted as Governor of National Resilience Institute,until 1999. [2]
When Abdurrahman Wahid became president in 1999,Agum was appointed as Minister of Transportation. In July 2001 he was moved to the position of Minister of Defense and Coordinating Minister of Politics,Social and Security during the fourth Wahid government cabinet reshuffle.
When Wahid was impeached by the People's Consultative Assembly and Megawati Sukarnoputri was appointed as president,Agum was appointed as Minister of Transport,a position he held in the Mutual Assistance Cabinet until 2004.
In January 2018,Agum was appointed as a member of the Presidential Advisory Council in a minor reshuffle,replacing Hasyim Muzadi who died in 2017. [3]
During the first direct presidential elections in Indonesia in 2004,Agum was selected as a vice presidential candidate. He joined the incumbent vice president Hamzah Haz as a running mate. The Hamzah –Agum team was supported by the United Development Party.
In the first round of the election (July 5,2004),the Hamzah –Agum team received relatively low support (only 3.5 million votes). These results put the duo into fifth place on in the 2004 Indonesian presidential elections behind SBY –Jusuf Kalla,Megawati Sukarnoputri –Hasyim Muzadi,Wiranto –Solahuddin Wahid and Amien Rais –Siswono Yudohusodo. The Hamzah –Agum team was therefore eliminated and was not eligible to take place in second round of the election held several months later.
In 2008 the West Java province held the first direct gubernatorial election. Agum took part in the competition,supported by a coalition of Indonesian Democratic Party - Struggle and United Development Party,with his running mate,the incumbent vice governor Nu'man Abdul Hakim.
Agum was unsuccessful with the Agum –Nu'man duo taking second place behind Ahmad Heryawan –Yusuf Macan Effendie team from coalition of the Prosperous Justice Party and National Mandate Party. [4]
Diah Permata Megawati Setiawati Sukarnoputri is an Indonesian politician who served as the fifth president of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004. She previously served as the eighth vice president from 1999 to 2001.
Abdurrahman Wahid, though more colloquially known as Gus Dur, was an Indonesian politician and Islamic religious leader who served as the fourth president of Indonesia, from his election in 1999 until he was removed from office in 2001. A long time leader within the Nahdlatul Ulama organization, he was the founder of the National Awakening Party (PKB). He was the son of Minister of Religious Affairs Wahid Hasyim, and the grandson of Nahdatul Ulama founder Hasyim Asy'ari. Due to a visual impairment caused by glaucoma, he was blind in the left eye and partially blind in his right eye. He was the first president of Indonesia to have had physical disabilities.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle is a centre to centre-left secular-nationalist political party in Indonesia. Since 2014, it has been the ruling and largest party in the House of Representatives (DPR), having secured 128 seats in the last election. Wiranto is an Indonesian politician and retired army general, who is serving as the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council, since December 2019. Previously, he was the Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces from February 1998 to October 1999 during Indonesia's transition from authoritarian rule to democracy, he ran unsuccessfully for President of Indonesia in 2004 and for the vice-presidency in 2009. On 27 July 2016, Wiranto was appointed Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, replacing Luhut Binsar Panjaitan.
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, commonly referred to as SBY, is an Indonesian politician and retired army general who served as the sixth president of Indonesia from 2004 to 2014 and the second Indonesian President from the military after Suharto. He founded the Democratic Party of Indonesia, he served as the 4th leader of the Democratic Party from 2014 until 2020, 8th and 10th Coordinating Minister of Politics and Security Affairs of Indonesia from 2000 until 2001, and again from 2001 until 2004. He also served as the president of the Assembly and chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute. He was also the former chairman of ASEAN due to Indonesia's hosting of the 18th and 19th ASEAN Summits.

Hamzah Haz is an Indonesian politician who served as the ninth vice president of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004 under President Megawati Sukarnoputri. He also chaired the United Development Party (PPP) from 1998 to 2007, and was the party's presidential candidate in the 2004 Indonesian presidential election.

The National Unity Cabinet was the Indonesian cabinet which served under President Abdurrahman Wahid and Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri from 29 October 1999 until 23 July 2001. The Cabinet was formed after Wahid and Megawati were elected President and Vice President by the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR). The cabinet was originally designed to look after the interests of the various political parties and the Indonesian National Armed Forces, but this notion quickly disappeared as Wahid's presidency began to break down.
Presidential elections were held in Indonesia on 8 July 2009. The elections returned a president and vice president for the 2009–2014 term. Incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, elected with a 20% margin in the 2004 election, sought a second term against former President Megawati Sukarnoputri in a rematch of the 2004 election, as well as incumbent Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Securing a majority of the votes in a landslide victory in the first round, Yudhoyono was re-elected without the need to proceed to a second round, scheduled to be held on 8 September if no candidate received a majority of the popular vote. Yudhoyono was officially declared the victor of the election on 23 July 2009, by the General Election Commission (KPU). At the time of his re-election victory, Yudhoyono, with nearly 74 million votes in his favour, held the record for the highest number of votes for a single person in any democratic election in history, surpassing Barack Obama's total of 69 million votes in the 2008 United States presidential election. His record was surpassed by his respective successors Joko Widodo who won 85 million votes in 2019 and Prabowo Subianto who won 96 million votes in 2024.
Achmad Hasyim Muzadi was an Indonesian Islamic scholar and cleric who served as chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama, from 1999 to 2010. The founder and director of the Al-Hikam Islamic boarding school, he was a proponent of moderate Islam, which he defined as being neither radical nor liberal, and criticized both Islamic fundamentalism and Islamic liberalism. Hasyim was the vice presidential running mate of President Megawati Sukarnoputri in the 2004 Indonesian presidential election, though the ticket was defeated in a runoff. He subsequently served in the Presidential Advisory Council from 2015 until his death.
From 20 to 21 October 1999, the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), the legislative branch of Indonesia, met to elect both the president and vice president of the country for a five-year term. The incumbent president, B. J. Habibie, declined to stand for election. On 20 October, Abdurrahman Wahid, chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama, was elected president and inaugurated on the same day. Wahid's opponent, Megawati Sukarnoputri was subsequently elected vice president the next day. The elections represented the first relatively democratic and peaceful transfer of power in the history of Indonesia.

On Wednesday, 20 October 2004, President-elect Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was inaugurated as the 6th president of Indonesia. Yudhoyono was the first democratically direct-elected president of Indonesia, after previous presidents was elected by the People's Consultative Assembly.
