Alcheringa, also known as "Alcher", is the annual cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati. The festival was started in 1996 by a group of students of IIT Guwahati. [1] Spread over 3 days and 4 nights, Alcheringa is conducted towards the end of January every year. The 27th edition of Alcheringa was held from 2nd February 2023 to 5th February 2023, [2] [3] witnessing 80+ events.
The festival features one of India's biggest rock band competitions, Rock-o-Phonix.
Alcheringa derives its etymology from Australian aboriginal mythology and translates to "The Eternal Dreamtime."
In 2002, ‘Alcheringa: Yin and Yang’ the concept of four pro-nites was first introduced. ‘Alcheringa: Navras’ in 2006, hosted the festival's first international act. [4] In 2011, Alcheringa's social initiative ‘Udaan - Giving flights to hope’ was started.[ citation needed ]
The latest edition of Alcheringa was held with limited participation and events pertaining to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

Alcheringa hosts over 80 competitions. Some of the competitions held at Alcheringa are Electric Heels, [19] the group dance competition, Voice of Alcheringa, the solo singing competition, Halla Bol, the street play competition, Rock-o-Phonix, [19] [1] [16] the rock band competition, Mr. and Ms. Alcheringa, [19] the personality contest, Crossfade, the scratching competition and Haute Couture, [19] the team based fashion designing event.
The Campus Princess is another beauty pageant of Alcheringa which started in its 20th edition, was conducted in association with the Miss India Organisation. [25] The Auditions for Campus Princess were judged by Miss Asia Pacific World 2013 Ms. Srishti Rana. Mute, the Mime competition was judged by Mr. Moinul Haque, the Sangeet Natak Academy Award winner.
World Carnival is an initiative by Alcheringa to promote cultures from across the world here in the North-Eastern part of the country. Alcheringa has had artists like Ciorras and Fastest feet in Rhythm from the United States, Ne Obliviscaris and poet Omar Musa from Australia, [2] [18] Fasta Duo and Murray Molloy from Ireland, [3] beatboxer Rizumik from Portugal, rock bands Ouzo Bazooka, [2] Tiny Fingers and Orphaned Land from Israel.
Alcheringa has also had the jazz band Tropic Green from Singapore, [3] the Portuguese horn player Mickael Faustino, [3] the Algeria Dance Company from Malta, Hungarian flutist David Simon and pianist Janos Palojtay, the German Classical jazz performer Mito, alternate pop music band BETTY [13] from the USA [16] and English hypnotist Andrew Newton and extreme technical metal band Meta Stasis. Udaan is a social initiative by Alcheringa [18] wherein the students of IIT Guwahati visit underprivileged children in various corners of India. Udaan reached 52 cities in 2016. [26] [27] [28] In Alcheringa 2018, "Desh Ka Sandesh" was organised under the umbrella of Udaan.
The underlying idea of the campaign North-East Unveiled is to promote a shared identity of North-East India with the rest of the nation while promoting its tourism, food, general practices and removing any stereotypes about North East India. This was done by releasing a series of videos highlighting the above. The North East Social Entrepreneurship Summit and The North East Townhall Discussions were held during Alcheringa 2016. [2] [18]
Alcheringa has in the past associated with freecharge, Swiggy, OnePlus, Hero MotoCorp, Wipro, [2] State Bank of India, Indian Oil, Maruti Suzuki, Ola, FastTrack, Daikin, Viber, Coca-Cola, KitKat and Baskin Robbins.
In the media sector, Alcheringa has been associated with the RED FM, The Telegraph, The Assam Tribune, Business India, North East Today, Metalbase India, etc.
Ravi Shankar, was an Indian sitarist and composer. A sitar virtuoso, he became the world's best-known expert of North Indian classical music in the second half of the 20th century, and influenced many musicians in India and throughout the world. Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999.
The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) is a public technical university established by the Government of India, located in Amingaon area, North Guwahati Village area, in the state of Assam in India. It is the sixth Indian Institute of Technology established in India. IIT Guwahati is officially recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India. IIT Guwahati has been ranked 7th in Engineering and 8th in Overall category in NIRF India Rankings 2021. As, per latest NIRF Ranking in 2023, IIT Guwahati has been ranked 7th among the engineering colleges in India.
Mood Indigo, affectionately known as MoodI or MI, is the cultural and signature festival of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. It will be held on 18th to 21st December in 2023. Started in 1971 by a group of students, it has attracted considerable media attention and numerous sponsors over time. Mood Indigo is also held in over 4000+ colleges and universities before ending in IIT Bombay.
Anoushka Shankar is a British-American sitar player and musician, as well as occasional writer and actor. She performs across multiple genres and styles—classical and contemporary, acoustic and electronic. In addition to releasing seven solo studio albums beginning with Anoushka (1998), she has also worked alongside a wide variety of musicians, including Karsh Kale on the full-length collaboration Breathing Under Water (2007) and her father Ravi Shankar. She has received nine Grammy Awards nominations and was the first musician of Indian origin to perform live and to serve as a presenter at the ceremony. She was the youngest and first woman to receive a British House of Commons Shield.
Indian rock is a music genre in India that may incorporate elements of Indian music with rock music, and is often topically India-centric. While India is more often known for its classical music, filmi, Bollywood music, Indi-pop, and Bhangra, the Indian rock scene has also produced numerous bands and artists.
Raghupati Dwarakanath Dixit is an Indian singer-composer, producer, and film score composer who is the frontman for the Raghu Dixit Project, a multilingual folk music band.
Pentagram is a four-piece Indian rock/electronica band started in 1994 in Mumbai.
Amit Trivedi is an Indian music director, singer, film scorer, composer, music producer and lyricist who works primarily in Hindi films. After working as a theatre and jingle composer and composing for non-film albums, he debuted as a film composer in the 2008 Hindi film Aamir, he gained prominence for his work in the Hindi film Dev.D (2009).
Rendezvous, known as "The RDV," is the flagship cultural festival of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. It's a celebration of culture, art, and talent like no other, showcasing creativity and innovation at its finest.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are Centrally Funded Technical Institutes located across India. They are under the ownership of the Ministry of Education of the Government of India and are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The Act declares them as Institutes of National Importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance as the country's premier institutions in the field of technology. The act currently lists twenty-three IITs. Each IIT has autonomy and is linked to others through a common council called the IIT Council, which oversees their administration. The Minister of Education of India is the ex officio chairperson of the IIT Council.
Techniche is the annual Techno-Management festival of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati. The festival was started in 1999 by Dhirendra Sinha, a Mechanical Engineering B Tech student along with a group of students within the IIT Guwahati campus. Spread over three days and four nights, Techniche is generally conducted towards the end of August each year.
Angaraag Mahanta, known by his stagename Papon, is an Indian playback singer and composer from Assam. Papon has also sung in many languages apart from Assamese like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Marathi. He is the lead vocalist and founder of the folk-fusion band Papon and The East India Company. He is the son of the noted Assamese singer Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta
NH7 Weekender is an annual, multi-city and multi-genre, music and comedy festival held in India. It is created by Only Much Louder (OML) and is among the largest South Asian arts festivals. It began in Pune, Maharashtra, India, as a three-day, multi-genre, music festival in 2010. Since 2012 it has expanded to multiple cities. In 2017, the lineup added comedy. Its title sponsor has been Bacardi since inception.
Jim Ankan Deka is an Indian musician, documentary film maker, photographer and director of Bangalore based organisation and music school Eastern Fare Music Foundation. He is the first person from Assam to open a music institute and a production house in Bangalore, India. He won multiple awards for his song Aawaz - speak up against sexual violence based on the 2012 Delhi gang rape incident.
The Vinyl Records (TVR), is an all-female, post-punk rock band based in New Delhi and Arunachal Pradesh. The band formed in February 2010, the band consists of lead vocalist and keytarist Cheyyrian Bark, percussionist Mithy Tatak, bass guitarist Minam Tekseng and lead guitarist & vocalist Band Jini. The band's debut album 'Whims' featured four tracks, which was followed-up in 2014 by their first internationally-released song; 'Ready, set, go!'. Since then, TVR has featured in publications such as 'The Times of India,' 'Rolling Stone India,' RSJ, Tehelka, NH7, Cosmopolitan (magazine) and Marie Claire magazine.
Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, Tezpur (GIMT-Tezpur) is a private institute offering degree level technical courses in the State of Assam is a Private college established by Shrimanta Shankar Academy (SSA) Society and Government of Assam, India. The college was established with permission from the state government and approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and is affiliated to Gauhati University (GU), Guwahati, Assam and also to Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU), Guwahati, Assam.
The Guwahati Half Marathon is an annual road running event held on the streets of Guwahati, India. The event is organised by the student body of Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. The twelfth edition of the event took place on 24 April 2022.
Avora Records is an Indian indie rock band from Aizawl, Mizoram formed in 2012 by Khos Hmar, Mamaa Ralte and Ruata Renthlei as a side-project to record songs. The group went through a series of line-up changes till it turned into a band with Stephen Hnamte, Sanga Ralte & CK Hauzel joining it. Since 2016, the band's line-up has been the same and in 2017, Mamaa Ralte parted ways with the band.
Alobo Achümi, known professionally as Alobo Naga, is an Indian singer and songwriter from Nagaland. He rose to fame with his debut album, Road of a Thousand Dreams. He has hosted his talk show, The Alobo Naga Show, since July 2021.
