The Joint Seat Allocation Authority, also known as JoSAA, is an agency established by the Ministry of Education formerly known as HRD Ministry to manage and regulate the admission to 110 tertiary institutes administered by the government of India. [1]

History

The agency was established by the ministry in 2018 to manage the allocation of seats for admission to 100 Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), National Institutes of Technology (NIT), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) and Government Funded Technical Institutes, starting with the 2018-19 academic year. It is made up of representatives from the ministry's Joint Admission Board and Central Seat Allocation Board, which are responsible for the allocation of seats to IITs and the other institutes respectively. [2] [3] In 2018, the agency announced 100 institutes and two special spot vacant seats by CSAB. Admission to the Institute of Chemical Technology Mumbai-IndianOil Odisha Campus is also carried out by JoSAA since 2021. [4] [5]

Spot round controversy

According to industry reports, between 3,000 [6] and 5,000 [7] seats in the institutes have been left vacant following the 2016 counseling process. Despite calls for a spot round of allocations to fill the vacancies, the agency has announced that a spot round will not be conducted. [2]

Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-Main), formerly All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), is an Indian standardised computer-based test for admission to various technical undergraduate programs in engineering, architecture, and planning across colleges in India. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency for admission to B.Tech, B.Arch, etc. programs in premier technical institutes such as the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT), which are based on the rank secured in the JEE-Main. It is usually conducted twice every year. Since mid of 2019, the JEE has been conducted fully online as a computerised test.

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an engineering entrance assessment conducted for admission to various engineering colleges in India. It is constituted by two different examinations: the JEE-Main and the JEE-Advanced.

Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are centrally funded technical institutes located across India. They are a group of 25 interdisciplinary technology-based-engineering research institutions in India which are focused on information technology. Five of them are established, funded and managed by the Ministry of Education (MOE). The other 20 are set up on the public-private partnership (PPP) model, funded by the central government, state governments and industry partners in the ratio 50:35:15.

India has the largest numbers of engineers as well as the largest number of engineering education institutes and infrastructure in the world. As of 2021, India annually produces fifteen lakh engineering graduates. India's technical education infrastructure includes 2500 engineering colleges, 1400 polytechnics and 200 schools of planning and architecture.

The Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) are a list of 38 academic institutions funded either by the Government of India or the State governments of India that participate in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for the admission process into their undergraduate programmes in architecture, planning, sciences, and various branches of engineering and technology.
