All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Madurai (AIIMS Madurai) is a Public hospital and Medical school that is located at Thoppur near Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. AIIMS Madurai was announced in 2015 and the institute was established in 2021.

The yearly MBBS intake is 50 and selection is done through NEET(UG). [1]

History

The AIIMS was officially announced on 28 February 2015, in the budget speech for 2015–16, where the Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley announced five more AIIMS, in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Assam and Tamil Nadu and an "AIIMS-like" institute in Bihar. [2] Tamil Nadu had proposed five sites to set up an AIIMS. Besides Thoppur, Sengipatti (Thanjavur), Pudukottai town, Chengalpattu (Kanchipuram) and Perundurai (Erode) were considered. [3] In 2018, the union cabinet gave an official approval for the location, on a 222-acre lot in the Thoppur, near Madurai. [3] [4] [5]

By January 2019, the boundary wall of AIIMS Madurai campus was completed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of AIIMS Madurai in January 2019. [6] The state government handed over the land to the Government of India in February 2020. [1] In March 2021, the funding agency, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), extended assistance. The loan agreement was signed in February 2022. [7] The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) informed Minister for Health and Family Welfare of Tamil Nadu Ma. Subramanian in February 2023 that the construction of AIIMS Madurai would begin by the end of 2024 and be completed by 2028. [8]

The AIIMS Madurai will have 15-20 super specialty departments. [4]

Hospital

The hospital will have around 750 beds. As per the current operational AIIMS data, it is expected that the hospital will cater to around 1500 OPD patients per day and around 1000 IPD patients per month. [4]

Like all other AIIMS the institute select students for MBBS course through NEET(UG) annually.

Medical College

The institution runs a medical college within the campus. The medical college has 50 UG (MBBS) seats. As the construction of the campus is not completed, classes of the first batch were taken at the Ramanathapuram Medical College. The college started with 50 students in April 2022, from the academic session 2021–2022. [1] [9]

Gopi Shankar Madurai is an Indian equal rights and Indigenous rights activist. Shankar was one of the youngest, and the first openly intersex and genderqueer statutory authority and one of the candidates to contest in 2016 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. Shankar is also the founder of Srishti Madurai Student Volunteer Collective. Shankar's work inspired the Madras High Court to direct the Government of Tamil Nadu to order a ban on forced sex-selective surgeries on intersex infants. In December 2017, Shankar was elected to the executive board of ILGA Asia. In August 2020, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment appointed Shankar as the South Regional representative in the National Council for Transgender Persons.

The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a group of autonomous government public medical universities of higher education under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. These institutes have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance. AIIMS New Delhi, the forerunner institute, was established in 1956 under administration of Jawaharlal Nehru. Since then, 24 more institutes were announced.

The standard entry-to-practice degree in modern evidence-based medicine in India is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Alternative systems of Medicine in India are Ayurveda (BAMS), Unani (BUMS), Siddha(BSMS), Homeopathy (BHMS). M.B.B.S. a credential earned upon completion of a five-and-a-half-year undergraduate program. The curriculum is divided into one year of preclinical studies in general science subjects and three and a half years of paraclinical and clinical studies, followed by a one-year clinical internship. Before beginning the internship, students are required to pass several examinations, the final one of which is conducted in two parts. Postgraduate education in medical specialties typically takes 3 additional years of study after the MBBS and concludes with the award of a Master of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine(MD). Postgraduate diplomas in medical specialities may also be awarded upon the completion of two-year training programs. After that a person can further get a degree in superspeciality in his or her respective branch after successful completion of 3 years of superspeciality in a medical college.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Majra is an under construction Public hospital and Medical school it located at Majra, Haryana, India. AIIMS Majra was Announced on 1 February 2019 and approved on 28 February 2019, construction started in 2023.
