Allen Central High School (Allen Central, Central, or ACHS) was a Title I American high school located in Eastern, Floyd County, Kentucky, United States, and was one of four public high schools in the Floyd County School system. The school colors were Columbia blue and gray; however, over time dark red has been added.
Built in the early 70s, with its first students being received in the fall of 1972, the first principal at Allen Central was Dave Hensley. After his death, a bridge that carries Kentucky Route 80 in front of Allen Central Middle School and Hensley's former home was renamed the Dave Hensley Memorial Bridge.
The nickname of Allen Central is Rebels. American football games are played on Rebel Field. Basketball, volleyball and archery are played in the J. H. Campbell Gymnasium. The school plays host to many county and district tournaments due to its centralized location.
In 2014, plans were made to consolidate Allen Central and South Floyd High School into a new Floyd Central High School, located near the Allen Central campus. The new school is expected to open in the fall of 2017. At that time, Allen Central will be converted into a technical education hub for the Floyd County school district, while South Floyd High will be converted to an elementary school.[5]
Mascot and flag scandals
For the past 34 years,[when?] the school has displayed symbols of the Confederate States of America. A Confederate flag was displayed in the school gymnasium as recently as January 2007,[6] and the school mascot is a Confederate soldier who, as of late 2006, appeared on a sign at the entrance to the school.[7] A nearby courtyard has blue brick forming the Cross of St. Andrew, and a mural in the lobby shows a rebel soldier carrying the flag on horseback. Other images of rebel soldiers and Confederate flags cover the same walls.[8] The images have stoked controversy, since many consider them to be racist symbols, whether in Floyd County, in Kentucky, and elsewhere, although there is also support in the county for retaining the symbols.[9]
Allen Central adopted the school flag and mascot in 1972, when four other schools were consolidated to form the high school. Students formed a committee and chose the mascot. The four previous schools and their mascots were the Maytown Wildcats, the Garrett Black Devils, the Wayland Wasps and the Martin Purple Flash.[8]

Lee College is a public community college in Baytown, Texas. Lee College's main campus occupies 40 acres (160,000 m2) near downtown Baytown and extension campuses throughout its service area. Juanita High School is a high school in Kirkland, Washington, administered by Lake Washington School District. It was opened on September 4, 1971, as a result of a campaign driven by an education theory known as the "Juanita Concept", developed by John Strauss, who became the school's first principal. It was later discovered that this concept did not work, primarily because of the passing of the "Basic Education Law" in the mid-1970s, resulting in the school later remodeling into a traditional format. The mascot chosen was the "rebel", to represent the rebellious nature of the teaching concept.
South Garland High School (SGHS) is a secondary school located in Garland, Texas. The school is part of the Garland Independent School District. The mascot for SGHS is the Titan, after retiring the Colonel, and the school colors are red and Columbia blue. The top right “square” on their shield use to be the confederate flag later being replaced by the swords. In 2009, the school was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency.
Antioch Community High School, Antioch, or ACHS, is a public four-year high school located in Antioch, Illinois, a far north suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. It is part of Community High School District 117, which also includes Lakes Community High School, a school that opened its doors and formed the district in 2004.

Riverdale Local School is a public K–12 school located near Mount Blanchard in Delaware Township, Hancock County, Ohio, United States. The school system is the result of a consolidation of three school districts. The communities of Forest, Wharton and Mount Blanchard comprise the school district which consolidated in 1962. The high school is a consolidation of Allen Central High School and South Floyd High School. The school mascot is Jaguars. School colors are Kentucky Teal, Black, and Gold.
The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) inherited a theme, including a nickname and mascot, of "Rebels" from its days as Arlington State College (ASC). The theme dated back to 1951, but after the integration of the school in 1962 and its admission into the University of Texas System in 1965, The Shorthorn student newspaper editorialized that it should be changed. Throughout the 1960s, editorials were written, protests were made, and referendums were held on the Rebel theme. However, with university president Frank Harrison consistently putting the decision fully in the control of UTA students, the student body repeatedly voted against changing the theme.
