Always Stay Sweet is a compilation album by His Name Is Alive, released by 4AD on February 23, 1999. [3]
His Name Is Alive is an American experimental rock band/project from Livonia, Michigan, United States. After several self-released cassettes, they debuted on 4AD Records in 1990, starting a long run at the label. Throughout the band's long history, leader Warren Defever has been the only constant member, with a variety of musicians and singers contributing over the years.
4AD is a British independent record label, founded by Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent in 1980. It was originally funded by, and an imprint of, Beggars Banquet.
Always Stay Sweet is one of the rare 4AD albums that was released in the USA only, and not the label's native UK. It is a compilation of tracks from His Name Is Alive's first five records for the label, all of which—except for Stars on ESP —were out of print in America at the time. This is presumably part of the reason why 4AD chose the album for American release only—it was a way for American audiences to acquire some of the band's early work in lieu of re-issuing the entire back catalog.
The album relies heavily on the early albums when HNIA were often described as a gothic folk band inspired by 4AD supergroup This Mortal Coil. Nearly all of the songs are from 1990's Livonia , 1991's Home Is in Your Head , and 1993's Mouth by Mouth . Only two songs from Stars on ESP are included, and nearly all of the songs from The Dirt Eaters EP are featured (although two of the tracks from this EP are alternate versions that appeared on the LPs). No tracks from 1998's Ft. Lake are included at all, although the front cover was based on the inside sleeve of that album. The song “Underwater” was previously unreleased, having been recorded during the sessions for Mouth by Mouth. “The Dirt Eaters” is the version that appeared on the USA release of Mouth by Mouth, without the Jack Nicholson sample.
This Mortal Coil was a music collective led by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of the British record label 4AD. Although Watts-Russell and John Fryer were technically the only two official members, the band's recorded output featured a large rotating cast of supporting artists, many of whom were otherwise associated with 4AD, including members of Cocteau Twins, Pixies, and Dead Can Dance. The project became known for its gothic, dream pop sound, and released three full albums beginning in 1984 with It'll End in Tears.
Home Is in Your Head is the second studio album by His Name Is Alive, originally released via 4AD in the UK on September 9, 1991, and on Rykodisc in the United States in 1992.
Mouth by Mouth is an album by His Name Is Alive, released by 4AD in 1993.
A version of the CD released by Mexican label Opción Sónica included two more songs from Stars on ESP and a rare track from the 1994 4AD compilation All Virgos Are Mad.
As this CD came out after 4AD's USA distribution deal with Warner Bros. Records had ended, 4AD was back in the position of having to find distribution for each USA release. While the label has mostly used the Alternative Distribution Alliance, which distributes many indie rock labels in America, Always Stay Sweet was actually distributed by major label Polygram Records.
Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA) is a music distribution company owned by Warner Music Group, which represents the rights to various independent record labels. ADA prides itself in providing "independent artist and label partners with access to the resources, relationships & experience required to share their creative vision with a global audience."
Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originated in the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. As grunge and punk revival bands in the US and Britpop bands in the UK broke into the mainstream in the 1990s, it came to be used to identify those acts that retained an outsider and underground perspective. In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the Internet, some indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term.
All tracks are written by His Name Is Alive, except where noted.

Detrola is an album by His Name Is Alive, released in 2006. Four years after being dropped from the 4AD roster, HNIA released this album on their own Silver Mountain Media Group label. While many of the band's longtime fans had been disappointed with the group's final two albums for 4AD, fan reception to Detrola was quite positive, with many observing that it was finally a proper follow-up to 1998's 4AD release Ft. Lake.
Livonia is the debut album by His Name Is Alive. It was originally released by 4AD on June 25, 1990 in the United Kingdom and in 1992 on 4AD/Rykodisc in the United States.
The Dirt Eaters in an EP by His Name Is Alive, originally released by 4AD in early 1992. It has never been released on its own in the United States, as it was included on the 4AD/Rykodisc US reissue of Home Is in Your Head in 1992.
Sings Man on the Silver Mountain and 8 Other Songs is a His Name Is Alive compilation album, released in 1992. Despite being an American band, His Name Is Alive was signed to the British 4AD label, and had no American distribution for their first three releases on 4AD. US-based Rykodisc re-issued the albums in the summer of 1992, shortly before 4AD signed a distribution deal with Warner Bros. Records so that all 4AD releases would see release in the United States. Bonus tracks were included on two CDs: Livonia featured an extra track called "Livonia", and Home Is in Your Head included The Dirt Eaters EP. To commemorate these releases, Rykodisc issued this compilation as a promotional item to record stores. Many die-hard fans of 4AD and HNIA, despite likely having all the songs included already, sought out and obtained the compilation CD to add to their collection. The artwork was based on the inside sleeve artwork from the 4AD UK release of Home Is in Your Head.
King of Sweet is a compilation album by His Name Is Alive, originally released in a limited run by the Perdition Plastics label in 1993. Most, if not all, of the songs had previously appeared on the band's many self-released cassettes in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and some of them had appeared in different versions on the band's 4AD releases.

Metal Queen – B-Sides & Rarities is a double CD compilation album released in 2007 under the label No Remorse Records, containing songs of the German hard rock singer Doro Pesch. It is unclear if this is a fully licensed compilation, an unofficial release or even a pirated publication. The album is not present in the discography section of Doro's official site and Discogs lists the album as an "unofficial release pretending to be released under No Remorse Records label". On the contrary, Encyclopaedia Metallum lists it as an official compilation.
