Amar Singh College, is an academic and professional college in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is the second oldest college in the Kashmir Valley after Sri Pratap College. [1]
It was established in November 1913 [2] as Amar Singh Technical Institute, to teach willing students art, culture, and basics like masonry and carpentry. It was formally opened on 29 May 1914 by Maharaja Pratap Singh. In June 1942, the Technical Institute was converted into Amar Singh College through bifurcation of Sri Pratap College commemorating the name of the father of Hari Singh, the then Maharaja of Kashmir. [1] The College was recognized by University Grants Commission of India (UGC) in June 1972. The College is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with B++ Grade.
The college is located in Wazir Bagh, in the city of Srinagar. It is spread over 35 hectares (86 acres) of land divided into a large playground, parks, gardens, and an infrastructural area.
At present, the college has multiple academic buildings making a total built-up area of about 30,000 square metres (320,000 sq ft). This includes the glorious heritage building, representing the finest blend of Anglo-Indian architecture, constructed in 1910 for running a technical institute. Presently it houses chemistry department, teaching staff room, UGC, IQAC Cell, NSS and NCC rooms, besides having six lecture theaters and three large halls for the conduct of examinations. The heritage building had got damages during earthquake in 2005 and devastating floods in September 2014. [3] However, it was repaired and restored to its actual look in 2017-18 by the then Jammu and Kashmir state Government through INTACH. In 2020, Amar Singh college was awarded the prestigious Award of Merit in the Unesco Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation for the restoration of the heritage building. [4] [5]
Jammu and Kashmir Institute of Mathematical Sciences is an autonomous public institution under recognition of University of Kashmir, situated inside the campus of Amar Singh College Srinagar in Indian administered Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which was established in 2014 by the higher education department of government of Jammu and Kashmir. Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, formerly Baroda College, is a public university in the city of Vadodara, Gujarat, India. Sher Garhi Palace is a former palace in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. The complex is located in the south of the Old City at the banks of the Jhelum river. It was the residence of the Afghan rulers and Dogra Maharajas of Jammu and Kashmir. Constructed in the 18th century, it has been continuously expanded and transformed. It is a fine example of Anglo-Kashmir architecture. Fires in the 1970s and the start of the 21st century destroyed major parts of the palace. As from 2015, restoration works have started on the remaining palace complex. An art museum gallery has been opened in the old council building in 2020.
Gulab Bhavan is a palace in Srinagar, India. It is a former residence of the maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir from the Dogra dynasty. The palace is in the eastern part of the city and overlooks the Dal Lake.
Government Degree CollegeSopore is an educational institution located in the town of Sopore in the Baramulla District of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The college was established in 1951 to provide higher education to the students of the area. It is one of the oldest institutes in the valley of Kashmir and is National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited. In its third cycle of NAAC assessment, the college was awarded grade A, for the first time in its history, after a NAAC peer team visit took place on May 10-11, 2023.
Mirza Hassan Khan , of Majini Mohallah Gilgit, was a captain of the 6th Infantry of the Jammu and Kashmir State Forces. Placed at Bunji in the Gilgit wazarat, Khan rebelled against the Maharaja's regime after his accession to India and participated in the overthrow of the governor of Gilgit in November 1947. He later fought in the First Kashmir War as part of Gilgit rebel forces under the command of Colonel Aslam Khan and rose to become a colonel in the Pakistan Army. After leaving the army, he founded the Gilgit League to protest against the Pakistan's ad-hoc administration of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Rajendra Tiku, is an Indian Visual Artist with specialization in Sculpture and known for his outdoor stone sculptures. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of art.

Government Degree College Shopian also known as GDC Shopian, is an autonomous degree college affiliated with University of Kashmir, located on a 67 kanal campus in Shopian in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In addition, the college facilitates off-campus education in collaboration with IGNOU, MANUU and the Department of Distance Education of University of Kashmir. Cluster University of Srinagar is a collegiate state university located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is a cluster of five colleges of the Srinagar city. It has been established under The Srinagar and Jammu Cluster Universities Act, 2016 together with Cluster University of Jammu and is an initiative of the centrally sponsored scheme, Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), to create new universities through upgradation of existing colleges and conversion of colleges in a cluster.
