Andrew James Baddeley (born 20 June 1982) [1] is an English middle-distance runner.
He finished sixth in the 1500 metres final at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg. He also competed at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and has a silver medal from the 2005 Summer Universiade.
He finished second in the 1500 metres final at the European Cup in Athletics 2007 in Munich, with a time of 3:48.08 minutes.
At the Bislett Games on 15 June 2007, Baddeley ran 3:51.95 for the mile which took almost 5 seconds off his personal best and moved him to 12th spot on the UK all time ranking list. He won the Dream Mile at the 2008 Bislett Games in a world leading time of 3:49.38, taking another 2 seconds off his lifetime best. Baddeley is a member of Harrow Athletics Club and competes in the British Athletics League matches when available for domestic duty. [2] He won the short race at the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country in both 2008 and 2009.
He took part in the Beijing 2008 Olympics qualifying for the 1500m finals in which he finished in 8th place, the highest finished place for a British athlete since Michael East finished 6th in 2004 at the Athens Olympics.
He ran the 1500 metres at the 2009 World Championships but only managed to reach the semi-finals. A month after the Championships, he competed in the Fifth Avenue Mile and beat Bernard Lagat and Leonel Manzano among others to win the race. [3] Also in 2009 he ran in the team which set a British record time of 14:54.57 in the 4×1500 metres relay.
Going into the 2010 European Athletics Championships, he had the European leading time of 3:34.50 (via a fifth-place finish at the British Grand Prix). [4] He failed to reach the podium in a tactical 1500 m final and he finished in sixth place behind the Spanish team in Barcelona. [5] He represented Europe at the 2010 IAAF Continental Cup and finished in fifth place, one spot behind European champion Arturo Casado. [6] He returned to defend his Fifth Avenue Mile title but managed only third place on the occasion, finishing behind Amine Laâlou and Bernard Lagat. [7]
On 11 August 2012, Baddeley became the holder of the UK parkrun record by completing the 5 km multi-terrain course at the Bushy Park event in 13:48, [8] a record that stood for almost 11 years. It was surpassed by Andy Butchart at the Edinburgh parkrun on 24 June 2023. [9]
In 2019, Baddeley founded media company The Running Channel with media executive Adam Tranter. The company raised £1 million in private investment to fund its international expansion. According to Baddeley, who serves as chief executive, the publisher reaches viewers in 120 countries, with a third of its audience located in the US. [10]
Baddeley attended Calday Grange Grammar School, and then graduated from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge with a first in Engineering. [11]

Hicham El Guerrouj is a retired Moroccan middle-distance runner. El Guerrouj is the current world record holder for the 1500 metres and mile events, and the former world record holder in the 2000 metres. He is the only man since Paavo Nurmi to win a gold medal in both the 1500 m and 5000 metres at the same Olympic Games.
Bernard Kipchirchir Lagat is a Kenyan-American middle and long-distance runner.
The men's 1500 metres at the 2004 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program were held at the Athens Olympic Stadium from August 20 to 24. Thirty-eight athletes from 26 nations competed. The event was won by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco, the nation's first title in the event after coming second twice ; El Guerrouj was the fifth man to win a second medal in the event. Bernard Lagat's silver put Kenya on the podium in the event for the third straight year; the United States and Great Britain were the only other nations to have accomplished that. It also made Lagat the sixth man to win two medals in the event, just behind El Guerrouj in both 2000 and 2004. Rui Silva's bronze was Portugal's first medal in the event.
Craig Mottram is a former Australian long and middle-distance runner who specialised in the 5000 meter event.
Amine Laâlou is a Moroccan track and field athlete, who specializes in middle-distance running. He has represented his country at the Summer Olympics on two occasions; in 2004 and 2008. He began his career as an 800 metres specialist and made his global debut at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. He won medals at smaller international competitions, including the 2004 Pan Arab Games and 2005 Mediterranean Games. He reached his first global final at the 2007 World Championships, taking sixth, and was a semi-finalist at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
The Fifth Avenue Mile is an annual 1 mile (1.6 km) road race on Fifth Avenue in New York City, United States. The race begins at 80th Street and heads twenty blocks south to 60th Street. First held on September 26, 1981, the race is currently organized by New York Road Runners. The competition regularly attracts world-class runners, who compete in special heats after the regular age division heats. The Fifth Avenue Mile has also inspired similar events in the same mould, including the Anlene Orchard Mile in Singapore.
Deresse Mekonnen Tsigu is an Ethiopian middle distance runner, who specializes in the 1500 metres. He is a two-time World Indoor champion and was the silver medallist at the 2009 World Championships. He represented Ethiopia in the event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and holds the Ethiopian record for the mile run.
Genzebe Dibaba Keneni is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. A 1,500 metres 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist, she won a gold medal in this event and a bronze in the 5,000 metres at the 2015 World Championships. Genzebe is the current world record holder for the indoor events of the one mile, 3,000m and 5,000m.
Shannon Solares-Rowbury is an American middle-distance runner from San Francisco, California. After competing collegiately for Duke University, she turned professional in 2007. Rowbury has represented the United States at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympics. She also represented the United States at the World Championships in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, winning the bronze medal in the 1500 meters in 2009. In 2015, Rowbury helped set the world record with the U.S. team for the distance medley relay event, and set a then-American record for 1500 meters on July 17, 2015, breaking Mary Slaney's 32 year-old mark with a time of 3:56.29.
Erin Donohue is an American athlete who competes in middle-distance track events. Donohue qualified for the U.S. Olympic team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 1500 meters.
Thomas Benjamin Lancashire is an English middle-distance runner. Lancashire represented Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 1500 m.
Jennifer Simpson is an American middle- and long-distance runner, formerly a steeplechaser. She won the gold medal in the 1500 meters at the 2011 World Championships, silvers at the 2013 and 2017 World Championships, and a bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in the event.
Hannah England is a British middle-distance running athlete who specialised in the 800 metres, 1500 metres and mile run. At 1500 m, she is the 2011 World Championship silver medallist and finished fourth at the 2013 World Championships. She also competed at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. England is one of only five British women in history to have run under two minutes for 800 m and nine minutes for 3000 m, the others being Christina Boxer, Kirsty Wade, Jessica Judd and Laura Muir. She announced her retirement from athletics on 14 January 2020.
The men's 1500 metres at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Olympic Stadium between 15–19 August. Among the favoured athletes in the event were defending champion Bernard Lagat, European champion Mehdi Baala, and the Kenyan season leaders Asbel Kiprop, Haron Keitany and Augustine Choge.
Matthew Centrowitz Jr. is an American middle-distance runner, who specializes in the 1500 metres. He won a gold medal in the event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He also achieved a bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2013 World Championships. Centrowitz is a five-time national champion in the 1500 m at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Morgan Uceny is a retired American track and field athlete who specialized in middle distance running. Uceny won three national championships and was the 2011 IAAF Diamond League Champion at 1500 meters. She ended 2011 as the first American since 1985 to be ranked number one in the world in the 1500 m by Track & Field News.
Alan Webb is an American former track and field athlete and former triathlete. He held the American national record in the mile, with a time of 3 minutes 46.91 seconds, from July 2007 to September 2023. Webb represented the United States at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the men's 1500-meters race. He competed professionally for Nike until the end of 2013. He retired after the 2014 Millrose Games. He currently serves as head coach for the Ave Maria University cross country and track and field teams.
Axumawit Alem Embaye is an Ethiopian middle-distance runner, who specialises in the 1500 metres. She is a two-time World Indoor Championship silver medallist from 2014 and 2022.
Dawit Seyaum Biratu is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner who specialises in the 1500 metres. She placed fourth at the 2015 World Championships and won the silver medal at the 2016 World Indoor Championships. Dawit took a bronze in the 5000 metres at the 2022 World Championships.
Jake Wightman is a British middle-distance runner who primarily competes in the 1500 metres. He won the gold medal at the 2022 World Championships, the first global gold in a middle distance event for a British male since Seb Coe's 1500 m title at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. At the European Athletics Championships, Wightman earned a bronze in 2018 and a silver for the 800 metres in 2022. He won bronze medals at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.
