Armando Monteiro (born 24 February 1952) is a Brazilian politician and lawyer. He has represented Pernambuco in the Federal Senate from 2011 to 2019. [1] He was the Minister of Development,Industry and Foreign Trade from 2015 to 2016,during the second term of president Dilma Rousseff. [2] Previously he was a Deputy for Pernambuco from 1999 to 2011. He is a member of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party. [3]
Monteiro is the son of the late Armando Monteiro Filho,who served as Minister of Agriculture of Brazil from 1961 to 1962. [4]
Progressistas is a centre-right to right-wing political party in Brazil. Founded in 1995 as the Brazilian Progressive Party,it emerged from parties that were successors to ARENA,the ruling party of the Brazilian military dictatorship. A pragmatist party,it supported the governments of presidents Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva,Dilma Rousseff,Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro. The impeachment of Dilma Rousseff,the 36th president of Brazil,began on 2 December 2015 with a petition for her impeachment being accepted by Eduardo Cunha,then president of the Chamber of Deputies,and continued into late 2016. Dilma Rousseff,then more than 12 months into her second four-year term,was charged with criminal administrative misconduct and disregard for the federal budget in violation of article 85,items V and VI,of the Constitution of Brazil and the Fiscal Responsibility Law,Article 36. The petition also accused Rousseff of criminal responsibility for failing to act on the scandal at the Brazilian national petroleum company,Petrobras,on account of allegations uncovered by the Operation Car Wash investigation,and for failing to distance herself from the suspects in that investigation.

Paulo Câmara,the incumbent governor of Pernambuco,was reelected in the first round in 2018 Pernambuco gubernatorial election,with 1,918,219 votes,the equivalent to 50.70% of the valid votes. In a crowded field,former mayor of Caruaru Raquel Lyra (PSDB) defeated Federal Deputy Marília Arraes (Solidarity) by close to 20 points in the second round. She was inaugurated on 1 January 2023.
